Ruth Moraa Obare,

P.O Box 9897-30100,

Eldoret Kenya.

I am writing to express my interest in the doctoral program at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for
Ocean Research Kiel. Using my current and future research, I plan to develop novel secondary
metabolites from marine microorganisms for breakthrough in medicine, aquaculture among
others that may help to treat a variety of bacterial and fungal infections.

While earning my masters in biochemistry at Egerton University, I developed an interest in

infectious diseases with a focus on natural products. As a research assistant at the Chemistry lab,
Egerton University, I aided in developing alternative testing methods, resulting in 40% more
accurate results during the testing of novel secondary metabolites. I earned my Master's degree in
Biochemistry, during which I published an article focusing on antibacterial secondary
metabolites from a medicinal plant and its associated fungal endophytes. I believe pursuing my
PhD at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel will allow me to further my
understanding of metabolomics using GNPS platform that will enhance my research.

GEOMAR’S advanced research facilities would allow me the technology and equipment to
advance my research and begin building novel secondary metabolites. I believe that under your
tutelage my research may one day be of equal importance and positively impact the lives of
many people. Additionally, I appreciate that GEOMAR takes measures to ensure diversity and
inclusion on campus, and I feel I will thrive in the educational atmosphere.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. If you need any further information from me or
wish to plan an interview, please don't hesitate to contact me. I look forward to joining the
program and becoming an official GEOMAR student.

Respectfully,

Ruth Obare.
