5) .IACS: INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF CLASSIFICATION SOCIETIES

CLASSIFICATION SOCIETIES: CLASSIFICATION SOCIETIES ARE ORGANIZATIONS THAT


ESTABLISH AND APPLY TECHNICAL STANDARDS IN RELATION TO THE DESIGN,
CONSTRUCTION AND SURVEY OF MARINE RELATED FACILITIES INCLUDING SHIPS AND
OFFSHORE STRUCTURES.

A NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANISATION IN THE SHIPPING INDUSTRY,


A CLASSIFICATION SOCIETY ESTABLISHES AND MAINTAINS TECHNICAL
STANDARDS FOR CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION OF MARINE VESSELS AND
OFFSHORE STRUCTURES. THE PRIMARY ROLE OF THE SOCIETY IS TO CLASSIFY SHIPS
AND VALIDATE THAT THEIR DESIGN AND CALCULATIONS ARE IN ACCORDANCE WITH
THE PUBLISHED STANDARDS. IT ALSO CARRIES OUT PERIODICAL SURVEY OF SHIPS TO
ENSURE THAT THEY CONTINUE TO MEET THE PARAMETERS OF SET STANDARDS. THE
SOCIETY IS ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR CLASSIFICATION OF ALL OFFSHORE STRUCTURES
INCLUDING PLATFORMS

• FLAG STATES MAINTAIN A SHIP REGISTER IN WHICH ALL SHIPS THAT SAIL UNDER
THEIR FLAG NEED TO BE REGISTERED. CLASSIFICATION SOCIETIES ARE LICENSED BY
FLAG STATES TO SURVEY AND CLASSIFY SHIPS AND ISSUE CERTIFICATES ON THEIR
BEHALF. THEY CLASSIFY AND CERTIFY MARINE VESSELS AND STRUCTURES ON THE
BASIS OF THEIR STRUCTURE, DESIGN AND SAFETY STANDARDS.

• THIRTEEN LARGEST MARINE CLASSIFICATION SOCIETIES IN THE WORLD ARE THE


MEMBERS OF THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF CLASSIFICATION SOCIETIES
(IACS).

UPON COMPLETION OF RELEVANT CLASSIFICATION SURVEYS.

• MORE THAN 90% OF THE WORLD'S CARGO CARRYING TONNAGE IS COVERED BY


THE CLASSIFICATION DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION AND THROUGH-LIFE COMPLIANCE
RULES AND STANDARDS SET BY THE TEN MEMBER SOCIETIES AND ONE ASSOCIATE OF
IACS.

SHIP CONSTRUCTION, OPERATION, SAFETY AND MANAGEMENT, AND TO DEVELOP
BEST PRACTICE IN THE INDUSTRY.

• VOLUNTARY ORGANIZATION OF OIL COMPANIES

• HAVE AN INTEREST IN THE SHIPMENT AND TERMINALIZING OF OIL CARGO.

• OCIMF WAS FORMED AT A MEETING IN LONDON ON 8TH APRIL 1970. IT WAS


INITIALLY THE OIL INDUSTRY'S RESPONSE TO INCREASING PUBLIC AWARENESS OF
MARINE POLLUTION, PARTICULARLY BY OIL, AFTER THE "TORREY CANYON" INCIDENT

• PURPOSE

• THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVES OF OCIMF ARE THE PROMOTION OF SAFETY AND


PREVENTION OF POLLUTION FROM TANKERS AND AT OIL TERMINALS.

• OCIMF IS ORGANISED TO CO-ORDINATE OIL INDUSTRY VIEWS AT IMO


MEETINGS, TO REVIEW TECHNICAL PROPOSALS CIRCULATED BY IMO AND TO ADVISE
ITS MEMBERSHIP ON LEGISLATIVE ACTIVITIES AS THEY DEVELOP.

• AN IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTION TO THE OVERALL SAFETY OF THE INDUSTRY IS


THE ROLE THAT OCIMF PLAYS IN PRODUCING TECHNICAL AND OPERATIONAL

PURPOSE

• THE SOCIETY IS THE INTERNATIONAL BODY ESTABLISHED FOR THE EXCHANGE OF


TECHNICAL INFORMATION AND EXPERIENCE, BETWEEN MEMBERS OF THE INDUSTRY,
TO ENHANCE THE SAFETY AND OPERATIONAL RELIABILITY OF GAS TANKERS AND
TERMINALS.

• TO THIS END THE SOCIETY PUBLISHES STUDIES AND PRODUCES INFORMATION


PAPERS AND WORKS OF REFERENCE FOR THE GUIDANCE OF INDUSTRY MEMBERS. IT
MAINTAINS WORKING RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHER INDUSTRY BODIES,
GOVERNMENTAL AND INTERGOVERNMENTAL AGENCIES, INCLUDING IMO, TO BETTER
PROMOTE THE SAFETY AND INTEGRITY OF GAS TRANSPORTATION AND STORAGE
SCHEMES.

10) THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF INDEPENDENT TANKER OWNERS


(INTERTANKO)

• IT IS A MEMBERSHIP ASSOCIATION FOR OWNERS OF


INDEPENDENT TANKERS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. THE ASSOCIATION WAS FORMED
IN ITS PRESENT GUISE IN OSLO IN 1970 TO SPEAK OUT FOR THOSE INDEPENDENT
TANKER OWNERS, I.E. NON-OIL COMPANIES AND NON-STATE CONTROLLED TANKER
OWNERS, FOR THE SAFE SHIPPING OF OIL AND CHEMICALS AND TO ACT AS A FORUM
FOR MARINE POLICY CREATION.[1] MEMBERSHIP IS OPEN TO THOSE OWNERS AND
OPERATORS OF OIL, GAS AND CHEMICAL TANKERS WHO FULFIL THE ASSOCIATION'S
MEMBERSHIP CRITERIA. INDEPENDENT OWNERS OPERATE A HUGE PERCENTAGE OF
THE WORLD'S TANKER FLEET AND THE VAST MAJORITY ARE INTERTANKO MEMBERS.
THE ORGANISATION HAD 250 MEMBERS, WHOSE COMBINED FLEET COMPRISES SOME
3,050 TANKERS TOTALLING 285 MILLION DWT.

• INTERTANKO IS COMMITTED TO WORKING FOR SAFE TRANSPORT, CLEANER


SEAS AND FREE COMPETITION.

• INTERTANKO'S MISSION IS TO PROVIDE LEADERSHIP TO THE TANKER INDUSTRY


IN SERVING THE WORLD WITH THE SAFE, ENVIRONMENTALLY SOUND AND EFFICIENT
SEABORNE TRANSPORTATION OF OIL, GAS AND CHEMICAL PRODUCTS.
11) INTERCARGO: THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF DRY CARGO
SHIPOWNERS

• INTERCARGO IS REPRESENTING THE INTERESTS OF QUALITY DRY CARGO


SHIPOWNERS. INTERCARGO CONVENED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 1980 IN LONDON AND
HAS BEEN PARTICIPATING WITH CONSULTATIVE STATUS AT THE INTERNATIONAL
MARITIME ORGANIZATION (IMO) SINCE 1993.

• INTERCARGO PROVIDES THE FORUM WHERE DRY BULK SHIPOWNERS,


MANAGERS AND OPERATORS ARE INFORMED ABOUT, DISCUSS AND SHARE
CONCERNS ON KEY TOPICS AND REGULATORY CHALLENGES, ESPECIALLY IN RELATION
TO SAFETY, THE ENVIRONMENT AND OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE. THE ASSOCIATION
TAKES FORWARD ITS MEMBERS’ POSITIONS TO THE IMO, AS WELL AS TO OTHER
SHIPPING AND INTERNATIONAL INDUSTRY FORA, HAVING FREE AND FAIR
COMPETITION AS A PRINCIPLE.

• INTERCARGO IS COMMITTED TO SAFETY AND QUALITY IN SHIP OPERATIONS,

THE INTERNATIONAL PROFESSIONAL ORGANISATION THAT UNITES AND REPRESENTS
THE WORLD'S SERVING SHIPMASTERS.

• THE IFSMA IS PRIMARILY CONCERNED WITH REPRESENTING THE INTERESTS OF


THE SERVING SHIPMASTERS IN BODIES SUCH AS THE INTERNATIONAL MARITIME
ORGANIZATION, THE INTERNATIONAL LABOUR ORGANIZATION AND OTHER
RELEVANT, INTERNATIONAL AND NATIONAL ORGANISATIONS.

• THE PURPOSE OF IFSMA IS TO BRING THE SHIPMASTERS' VIEWS ON MATTERS OF


MARINE SAFETY, MARITIME SECURITY AND PROTECTION OF THE MARINE
ENVIRONMENT TO RECOGNITION AT THE REQUIRED LEVEL AND, AT THE SAME TIME,
TO FORGE A MORE EXCLUSIVE AND PROFESSIONAL STATUS FOR SHIPMASTERS, ONE
BASED UPON THEIR PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY TOWARD BOTH SHIPOWNERS
AND SOCIETY.
