Healthcare is a career field that definitely interests me. I love being able to help others

when needed and help people reach their goals. Healthcare has the most diverse departments in

working. Since healthcare is something I want to do when I am older, I chose to do the

healthcare science pathway at Creekview High School. By doing this pathway, I was able to go

more in depth into what healthcare workers do, the career fields, and how to act in the workforce.

This helped me learn so much more and now I want to become a Registered Nurse (RN).

A Registered Nurse provides patient care, coordinates with other doctors, and educates

patients or the public about health conditions. They help perform physical examinations, prepare

patients and tools for surgeries, and much more. An RN can help work in many departments of

the healthcare field, it just depends on the ability and education level of a nursing degree you

have. Some titles other than RN are Labor and Delivery Nurse, ER nurse, Home Care RN, and

Surgical Assistant RN. A Registered Nurse has many tasks and responsibilities within the

department they are in. They might have to chart medical records, always are taking care of

patients, record vital signs and how the patient is doing physically, and they also do have to

provide emotional support if necessary. Many of these jobs can be very hard, but the pay does

make it worth it. The average salary of a Registered Nurse is about 77,100 per year. The

projected job growth rate is proposed at an extraordinary 16%. That shows how much people

want to come into the medical field for this kind of job.
In the healthcare world, education has become a big part. For the job of an RN, most

people who have the job earn a bachelor's degree, but you can get just an associate degree.

College majors that are super helpful and relate to this job are a Bachelor of Science in Nursing

and a Diploma in Nursing. Those are great options as they provide opportunities to specifically

major in nursing. Options of schools that provide an opportunity to attend these specific

programs are Daytona College, BYU Idaho, UCLA, Utah State, and Southern California

University of Health Sciences.

As a Registered Nurse, there are obvious certificates you need like CPR certification and

your college degree’s/certifications. Other than those, you only need certifications if you only

want to do certain nursing programs and not get a degree, specifically in nursing. All nurses do

have to take the State Board Exam to work in nursing fields. Additional experiences an RN

needs is to complete their residency program, and this can last from 6 months to 1 year. There

are many groups or organizations that help continue and consistently keep a nurse’s skills up to

date. Some of these organizations may include the American Nurses Association, the National

League for Nursing, or the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses. A nurse needs to

have great interpersonal skills such as communication in social settings, being able to emphasize

with others, good teamwork and building relationships with them, etc. You need to make sure

you are compatible in fast paced environments and have quick problem-solving skills for this

kind of environment. If you can have these skills, you can be one of the best nurses in the field.

As a high school student, it is critical for a student to like the anatomy and physiology of

the body. They need to be prepared for messy work and gruesome images that they might see

while in the healthcare field. If they still want to continue further in this career, they might want

to investigate their school to see if they have a pathway for healthcare to complete. It can help

them look into this career and see if they would want to do it without the extremes. After, they
can look at colleges with great medical programs for this career. It is ultimately up to their

decision of what college to go to that they feel most comfortable with. Other than those tips, high

school students will be able to decide for themselves if this is the career they want. As a high

school student in this situation, I specifically made goals for school to help my career specific to

a Registered Nurse. I completed the Healthcare Science pathway at Creekview to help my

education be more effective in college. I have researched the best schools for nursing to help me

best in my career.

I have heard of this career from my sister-in-law who is a Registered Nurse. She had

exclaimed how much she loved it and shared stories with me, so I decided to further research this

topic. I can see this as a career path to pursue in my future for sure. I love being able to help

others to the best of my ability, and I feel like nurses do this best. There are many great qualities

nurses have that I want to emphasize in my life. I can’t wait to see where my future leads in this

career and I know it will help me become an even better person through the experiences in this

career.
