Overall Expectations

D1. analyze the operation of technologies that use gravitational, electric, or

magnetic fields, and assess the technologies’ social and environmental impact;
D2. investigate, in qualitative and quantitative terms, gravitational, electric, and
magnetic fields, and solve related problems;
D3. demonstrate an understanding of the concepts, properties, principles, and
laws related to gravitational, electric, and magnetic fields and their interactions
with matter..

PART 1: Electromagnets: How to create electromagnets.(30 marks)

As you've been learning, magnets and electromagnets are incredibly important in a

variety of applications, from powering motors to storing data on hard drives.
Oersted made the discovery for which he is famous in 1820. At the time, although
most scientists thought electricity and magnetism were not related, there were
some reasons to think there might be a connection.Danish scientist Hans Christian
Oersted had discovered that an electrical current in a wire from a battery caused a
nearby compass needle to deflect.

Special Instruction :
Project report should not be more than 6-7 Pages.
Instruction:
1. Start your Project by Table of Contents and Summarize it.
2. Then introducing the topic of Electromagnets and explaining their relevance
in physics. Give a brief overview of what you will be discussing in the report.
3. Once you introduce the topic, explain its methodology in physics with the help
of the experiment process.
4. Once you have finished reading the article, review your notes and think about
the most important points and insights that you want to convey in your
summary.Discuss the results.
5. Briefly give light on its Conclusion .

Highlighted are answers.

a. Tesla is a unit of flux density.

b. A permeable substance is one through which the magnetic lines of force
can pass very easily.
c. The materials having low retentivity are suitable for making temporary
magnets
d. A magnetic field exists around moving charges
e. Ferrites are ferromagnetic Materials
f. Air gap has lower eluctance as compared to iron or steel paths.
g. The direction of magnetic lines of force is from north pole to south pole
h. Fleming’s left hand rule is used to find direction of force on a current
carrying conductor in a magnetic field.
i. Magnetising steel is normally difficult because it has a low permeability
j. The unit of relative permeability is dimensionless.
