Reply to non-payment of rent notice

INTRODUCTION

Purpose:

When the landlord sends a notice to the tenant for non-payment of rent, then the tenant replies to
such notice. The tenant is bound to give reasons for such non-payment and then can accept the fault
by paying the specified amount due. The notice has to be replied within the specified time as
mentioned in the notice received.

Ingredients:

2. Name and address of the landlord
3. Name and address of the tenant
4. Details of the rent agreement
5. Reason for delay/non-payment of rent
6. Resolution – Payment of dues / extension of time
7. Sign of the tenant

Dear Sir,

This letter is in response to your notice dated {.} sent to me/my client Mr. {} (hereinafter referred to
as ‘tenant’). You and the tenant signed the rent agreement on {.} for a period of {.} at a rent of
{amount_of_rent} for the property situated at {address_of_the_property}.

That as per the said Agreement, the tenant always paid the rent on time. Due to {state_the_reason}
the tenant failed to pay for {}.

Option 1:

That the due rent has been paid by the tenant on {.} and the receipt of the same has been annexed
to this letter. The tenant sincerely apologises for the delay in payment of rent.

Option 2:

That the tenant has a good rental history and they take impeccable care of your property. The
tenant has been going through {describe_the_problem} and request you to extend the time till {.} for
clearing the dues. The tenant assures you that the payment will be made by this time along with late
payment fees.

Therefore, you are requested to withdraw the above legal notice against the tenant henceforth, falling
which our client will be constrained to initiate the appropriate legal proceeding.
