Task: Locate some places in the Philippines where Indigenous Knowledge/people exists.

Bagobo tribe – The upland Bagobo live in the very mountainous region between the upper Pulangi and
Davao rivers on Mindanao in the Philippines, whereas the coastal Bagobo once lived in the hills south
and east of Mount Apo.

The Bagobo are considered the most colorful people of the Philippines, heavily embroidering their abaca
clothing with beads and stitch work.

Banwaon tribe - The Banwaon tribe can be found in Agusan Del Sur. It is also the second largest group in
the area.

Their name literally means mountain people and they subsequently inhabit the forests of Agusan Del
Sur. They are traditionally nomadic but they were forced to settle because of the onslaught of
civilization.

Manobo tribe - The Manobo tribe is one of the 110 groups of indigenous peoples in the Philippines. The
Manobo people are mostly concentrated in the Southwestern part of the province of Bukidnon,
Mindanao Island, Philippines.

Manobo tribe is culturally rich in traditional practices, medicinal uses, diversity, and traditional
knowledge based on their community plant resources. They dwell in hinterlands and mountainous
regions in the southern part of the Philippines and live an intricate life dependent on agriculture and
forest plants.
Task: Identify and attach photo of some indigenous people and cite example of indigenous knowledge.

Manobo revolve around the concept of many unseen spirits interfering in the lives of humans. They
believe that these spirits can intrude on human activities to accomplish their desires. The spirits are also
believed to have human characteristics.

The Banwaons have stories depicting war and heroes passed on orally. This includes tud-om, which is a
series of sacred verses which can be done to ask for blessings, peace, and institution of new chieftain,
thanksgiving, and a prayer for the departed.
The Bagobo are considered the most colorful people of the Philippines, heavily embroidering their abaca
clothing with beads and stitchwork. They also produce fine metal craft, working in brass, bronze, and
iron, and are known for their betel boxes.

Task: What is the connection of indigenous knowledge to science and technology?

The connection of indigenous knowledge to science and technology is that some indigenous knowledge
inspired the modern tools that we have today, we were once like them, we used to use the same tools
as we they do but we progressed as species, everything came from our past, and the past is what
indigenous knowledge is all about.

Task: How do society and culture influence the development of science and technology?

Science in itself is universal, something that isn’t limited to anything so there is no surprise that society
and culture influences science, as there is science about the society and culture, it influences this
because it has knowledge in it, there is something to learn and figure out.
