Cargo Types
and
Containers
What are the different types of ships?

Ships are classified basis the cargo they carry

• Containerized cargo
• Liquid Bulk cargo
• Dry Bulk cargo
• Break Bulk cargo
Containerized cargo
• Toys, televisions, DVDs, clothing, meat and computers;
containers are the best way to transport these and
many similar products.

• One twenty-foot container can hold the shopping of 300

trolleys! Or 3,000 game computers! Or 1,000,000
pencils!
Liquid Bulk Cargo
• Crude oil, petrol, fuel oil,
vegetable oils and even
wine; all liquid
products which are often
transported on big tankers.
• These aren’t containerised,
but the ship has sections
under its deck, there liquid
can be filled in.
Dry Bulk Cargo
• Dry bulk refers to grain, coal, iron
ore, cement, sugar, salt and sand.
• They are not packaged separately
but transported in large quantities
in the hold of a ship, under the
deck.
Breakbulk Cargo
• Cargo that cannot fit in standard-size shipping
containers or cargo bins. Instead, cargo is
transported in bags, boxes, crates, drums,
barrels, pallets or is simply rolled, lifted, or
pushed onto a ship or barge.
• Examples of common breakbulk goods include
reels and rolls, steel girders, structural steel,
heavy or oversized goods, bagged cargo
(cement, sugar etc), palletised cargo (paint,
chemicals etc), timber etc
Refrigerated Cargo
• A reefer ship is a refrigerated cargo
ship, typically used to transport
perishable commodities which require
temperature- controlled transportation, such
as fruit, meat, fish, vegetables, dairy products
and other foods.
What are Hazardous Goods?
Dangerous goods, abbreviated DG, are items or
substances that when transported are a risk to
health, safety, property or the environment.
Hazardous materials (abbreviated as HAZMAT or
HAZ) are substances, solids, liquids, or gases that
can harm people, other living organisms, property,
or the environment more specifically.
How is Hazardous Cargo classified?
• Explosive
• Gases
• Flammable Liquids
• Flammable Solids
• Oxides and Peroxides
• Toxic Substances
• Radioactive Materials
• Corrosives
• Goods not covered under any of the above
classes
Container Stuffing
Stuffing – term used to indicate loading of the container with goods
There are 2 types

Factory stuffing – Empty container on a trailer Port stuffing– Truck carries goods from
is sent to the exporter’s factory/ warehouse. factory/ warehouse to CFS/ ICD. Here the
Goods are loaded, and then trailer carries goods are stuffed into containers, and then
them to the CFS/ ICD for customs clearance. presented for Customs Clearance.
Types of Container
• 20/40ft Standard Dry
• 20/40ft Reefers
• Open top containers
• High Cube Containers
• Flat Racks
20/40ft Standard Dry
• Used to transport dry goods, that can be fit
inside a container ex. Clothes, onions, potatoes,
video game controllers
• 1 TEU–Twenty-foot equivalent unit = Amount of
volume that can be fit into a 20ft container
• TEU is a standard within the industry
20/40ft Reefers
• A refrigerated container is called a reefer
• Contains a self-contained cooling system that
keeps the container at the temperature specified
by the exporter
• Used to carry meat, wine, fish, other perishable
items
Open top containers
• Open top containers serve similar storage/transport
purposes as regular shipping containers, however, are
able to accommodate much larger objects.
• The top of the container is open and is covered with a
strong rubber tarpaulin rather than a solid roof.
• The tarpaulin is secured with removable bows to hold
it in place and features a door header that swivels
outwards to allow for loading from the top or the end.
High Cube Containers

• Have a height of 9.5ft vs the normal

8.5ft
• Extra height allows for more storage
Flat Racks
• Flat Rack Containers are a type of specialized
containers having walls only at the short end of
the container.
• This is why these containers are employed
when the cargo needs to be loaded from the
top or sides due to different dimensions or
abnormal loads.
