INTRODUCTION
About upcycling:
Upcycling means using discarded or vintage pieces of clothing and
transforming them into something better. To 'upcycle' is to take something
already made and then improve upon it, or turn it into a fresh item, meaning that
you're not seeking out new, raw materials to start from scratch. It means older
clothes remain in circulation rather than heading to landfill. Upcycling is
the process of converting an old or unwanted product into a new product.
Upcycling differs from recycling in that it does not involve breaking down a
product into its base materials. Rather, it involves refashioning an existing
product by maneuvering its parts or adding additional parts to it. Upcycled
items could be post-consumer waste (items that have been purchased, worn, and
discarded) or deadstock (items that did not sell). This produces less waste and
also, by re-using something to make a product, you are decreasing the need for
new raw materials and this can result in a reduction of air pollution, water
pollution, energy usage and even greenhouse gas emissions. This has prompted
a lot of people to delve deeper into the world of upcycling, specifically
upcycled wooden furniture.
Upcycling with style involves adding value (in the eye of the beholder or the up
cycler) to something that would otherwise have been thrown away, recycled,
lost in storage or abandoned. It can involve repurposing and reusing, refreshing,
revamping and reviving or creating and re-creating.
When you compare that to upcycling the difference is that when you upcycle
something you are catching the item before it enters the waste system whether
that is landfill or recycling.

So in other words you are taking it ‘up’ out of the waste ‘cycle’.

Need of Upcycling
 Upcycling saves energy and cost (to society) and doesn’t involve breaking
down the molecular properties of the original item you are upcycling.

 We all buy too much clothing.  Fashion is fickle, waste bands increase and
decrease, and clothes wear out, get ripped torn or stained.

 Thankfully recent research suggests that 50% of those aged 25-34 choose

to repair clothes instead of throwing them away when they can.
Thrift Store
A shop that sells used things such as clothes, books, and furniture, video games
and music instruments etc. is known as a thrift store. The main reason behind
this mini project is to do upcycling with style so that it doesn’t feel old to the
customer and can save them money as well via opening a thrift store both
online and offline.
Various Phases of thrift stores
 In the introduction phase, stores will be opened in the busy streets of
Delhi and Ghaziabad where clothes, books and furniture can easily catch
the buyer’s eyes.
 After that in expansion stage we will be tapping metro cities like
Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata etc. to extend the market reach.
 For avoiding declining stage, we will expand ourselves in various
categories of product as well to help consumers as much as possible.

VISION, MISSION AND OBJECTIVES

Vision:
Our vision is to become one of the leading brands in the thrift cum used good
stores industry with best upcycled products and to establish a one stop thrift
store in Delhi, Ghaziabad, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and other
cities in India.
Mission:
Our mission is to establish thrift store business that will make available a wide
range of second hand goods and products at affordable prices to the residents
where we intend opening chains of our thrift stores. We want to generate
enough income to be able to properly finance our business and reduce the
overuse of increasingly scarce natural resources.
Objectives:
 Providing people with reuse services to stop wearable clothes being
thrown into the waste stream or left unused.

 Running education programmes and campaigns to raise awareness of the

socio-environmental impacts and to persuade and inspire people,
businesses and policy makers to take action to keep clothes in use for
longer. This includes wearing more second-hand rather than new, passing
on unworn clothes for someone else to use, buying less, buying better
quality, caring for and repairing clothes.

 Reduce waste and carbon emissions.

 Reduce the need for using new or raw materials to produce new furniture.

 Encourage creativity and innovation.

Products/ Services:
 Furniture: We’ll clean and polish the furniture items such as wooden
tables, chairs, cradles, old rugs and carpets, cupboards, etc. which are in a
reusable condition and sell them to at very low and economical prices.

 Clothes, Shoes & Books: The reusable books, shoes, fashion

accessories, and clothes like dress, shirts, sweaters, jackets etc. will also be
kept at the store to be purchased by the low-incomes.

 Small Electronic Devices: We will also sell the technology products

and small electronics such as cell phones, microwaves, printers, mobile and
computer accessories, storage devices and much more than that.

 Sports Equipment & Musical Instruments : This type of inventory

is often found in the solely new condition as people after getting bored put
their guitars, pianos, rackets, footballs and the things like that outside their
house to be taken by someone, so we have decided to keep such reusable
things in our shop.

COMPETITOR’S ANALYSIS

A competitive analysis is a strategy that involves researching major competitors

to gain insight into their products, sales, and marketing tactics. Implementing
stronger business strategies, warding off competitors, and capturing market
share are just a few benefits of conducting a competitive market analysis.

Competitor analysis is an important step in any business venture, including

making marvelous creations out of discarded materials. Here are some steps
you can take to conduct a competitor analysis:

Identify your competitors: Make a list of other businesses or individuals

who are making marvelous creations out of discarded materials. This could
include upcycling shops, artists, or DIY bloggers.

Analyze their products: Take a close look at the types of products your
competitors are creating, as well as the materials they are using. Look for gaps
in the market where you can differentiate yourself.

Evaluate their marketing strategies: Look at how your competitors are

promoting their products. Are they using social media, blogging, or other
marketing channels? Take note of what seems to be working and what doesn't.

Consider their pricing: Look at how your competitors are pricing their
products. Are they pricing their products similarly to yours? Are they offering
any discounts or promotions that you could consider

Look for opportunities to collaborate: Are there any opportunities to

collaborate with your competitors? For example, could you team up to create a
joint product or promote each other's work
Differentiate yourself: Based on your analysis, find ways to differentiate
yourself from your competitors. This could involve using different materials,
creating unique designs, or offering a different pricing strategy.By conducting a
thorough competitor analysis, you can gain valuable insights into the market
and identify opportunities to differentiate yourself from the competition.
STRATEGY AND IMPLEMENTATION SUMMARY
MARKETING PLAN
The marketing plan details the strategy that a company will use to market its
products to customers. A marketing plan is part of a business plan, which
describes all of the important aspects of a business, such as its goals, values,
mission statement, budget, and strategies.
If you're looking to create a marketing plan for turning discarded items into
marvelous products, here are some strategies that you might consider:

Highlight the sustainability factor: One of the primary benefits of

creating products from discarded materials is that it is an eco-friendly option.
Highlighting the sustainability aspect of your product can help you to appeal to
environmentally conscious consumers who are looking for ways to reduce their
impact on the planet.

Showcase the uniqueness: Another key selling point of products made

from discarded materials is their uniqueness. No two items will be exactly alike,
which can be a significant selling point for consumers who are looking for
something that is one-of-a-kind.

Focus on the creative process: Showcasing the creative process involved

in creating your products can be another effective marketing strategy. This can

help consumers to appreciate the effort that goes into making each item and can

also give them a sense of ownership in the product.

Create a brand story: Developing a compelling brand story can help you to
connect with consumers on a deeper level. By highlighting the inspiration
behind your products and the passion that goes into making them, you can help
consumers to feel more connected to your brand and its values.

Leverage social media: Social media can be an excellent platform for

showcasing your products and reaching potential customers. Consider using
platforms like Instagram or Pinterest to share photos of your products, highlight
your creative process, and engage with your audience.

Partner with influencers: Partnering with influencers in your industry can

help you to reach a wider audience and build credibility for your brand. Look
for influencers who share your values and aesthetic and consider offering them
free products in exchange for promotion on their social media channels.

By leveraging these strategies, you can create a marketing plan that highlights
the benefits of your products and helps you to connect with customers who are
looking for sustainable, unique, and creative products.
Sales Strategy:
A sales strategy is a plan to achieve a sales goal and is what directs the selling
activities of a start-up business (and in fact any business). The sales strategy
describes how a business will win, retain and develop customers. In 'lean start-
up' terminology it is referred to as the 'customer development strategy'.

product or a service. Effective product assessment, market definition, media
analysis, and budgetary choices result in an optimum plan—never the perfect
plan because resources are always limited.
 Even though our thrift store is well located and our charity cause is
worthy of pursuit, we will still go ahead to intensify publicity for the
business. We are going to explore all available means to promote our
thrift store.

Market conditions, the ability of customers, demand and supply, need of the

product like regular item or occasional, etc.

and later we found as a discarded material of our house. So we are going to
make a business plan by using newspaper.

Newspapers are a common item that can be repurposed and reused in many
creative ways. Here are some business ideas that use newspaper:

 Paper Products: Newspapers can be turned into paper products like

stationery, journals, and notebooks. You can use a variety of techniques
like binding, stitching, or weaving to create unique and eco-friendly
products. These products can be sold online, in local markets, or to
stationery stores.

materials like boxes, bags, and wrapping paper. You can create
customized packaging solutions for small businesses, e-commerce
companies, or individuals who are looking for sustainable alternatives to
traditional packaging materials.

 Art and Crafts: Newspaper can be used as a medium for creating art
and crafts like papier-mache sculptures, wall art, or origami. You can
create your own designs or offer customized services for individuals or
businesses who want to incorporate newspaper art into their decor.

 Pet Bedding: Newspapers can be shredded and used as bedding for

pets like dogs and cats. You can create eco-friendly pet bedding products
that are affordable and easy to dispose of.

buildings. You can offer insulation installation services using recycled
newspaper products to customers who want to reduce their carbon
footprint and lower their energy bills.

campfires, fireplaces, or barbecues. You can create your own brand of
eco-friendly fire starters and sell them to outdoor enthusiasts or camping
supply stores

being creative and resourceful, you can turn this common item into something
valuable and profitable while also contributing to environmental sustainability.

PROCESS

The process of making pet bedding using newspaper involves

several steps:

 Collecting newspapers: The first step is to collect used newspapers from

various sources like local newspapers, offices, schools, and recycling
centers.

 Shredding newspapers: The newspapers are then shredded into small

strips using a shredding machine. This process helps to break down the
paper fibers and create a soft and absorbent material.

 Compressing the paper: The shredded newspaper is then compressed

using a specialized machine that forms it into sheets. These sheets are then
cut into the desired size for pet bedding.

 Sanitizing the bedding: The pet bedding is then sanitized to ensure that
it is free from bacteria and other harmful microorganisms. This can be done
using heat, steam, or other sanitizing methods.

 Packaging and distribution: The pet bedding is then packaged and

labeled for distribution. It can be sold online, in pet supply stores, or through
other distribution channels.

The key to producing high-quality pet bedding using newspaper is to ensure

that the newspapers are properly shredded and compressed, and that the
bedding is sanitized to prevent any health risks to pets. By using recycled
newspaper, pet owners can also feel good about using an environmentally-
friendly product that helps to reduce waste and support sustainability.

Placing of Product
1. Pet supply stores: A pet bedding business could partner with pet supply
stores to sell its products. This would allow the business to reach a wider
audience and increase its visibility among pet owners. The business could
also offer special promotions or discounts to customers who purchase its
products at these stores.

2. Pet shows and events: Participating in pet shows and events is an

excellent way for a pet bedding business to showcase its products and
connect with pet owners. The business could set up a booth or display its
products at these events to attract potential customers.

3. Direct selling: A pet bedding business could use direct selling methods,
such as door-to-door sales or selling at flea markets, to reach customers in
their local area. This method can be effective for building a loyal customer
base and gaining valuable feedback from customers.

4. Online marketplaces: Selling through online marketplaces such as

Amazon or Etsy can be an effective way for a pet bedding business to
expand its reach and sell its products to a larger audience. These platforms
offer a wide customer base and provide access to customers who may not
be reached through traditional marketing channels.

It's important for a pet bedding business to assess its target market and choose
place strategies that align with its goals and objectives. By using a combination
of these strategies, a pet bedding business can increase its visibility, reach new
customers, and ultimately grow its sales.

PROCESS
Making a quilt from old clothes is a great way to repurpose and upcycle items
that might otherwise go to waste. Here are the general steps involved in the
process:

 Collect old clothes: Gather together a collection of old clothes that you
want to use for your quilt. This could include anything from t-shirts and
jeans to dresses and button-up shirts. You can use clothes that are stained or
ripped as long as you cut around the damaged areas.

 Wash and dry the clothes: Before you start cutting up the clothes, be
sure to wash and dry them. This will help to remove any dirt or odors and
ensure that the fabric is clean and ready to use.

 Cut the clothes into squares or rectangles: Use a rotary cutter,

scissors, or a fabric cutter to cut the clothes into squares or rectangles of
equal size. The size will depend on the design you have in mind and the size
of the clothes you are working with.

 Arrange the squares: Lay out the squares or rectangles in the pattern
you want for your quilt. This could be a traditional patchwork pattern or
something more modern and abstract.

 Sew the squares together: Once you have the squares arranged, start
sewing them together. Use a sewing machine or hand-sew them together
using a needle and thread. Be sure to sew them together in rows and then
sew the rows together to form the quilt top.
 Add batting and backing: Cut a piece of batting and backing fabric to
the same size as your quilt top. Layer the three pieces together – quilt top,
batting, and backing – and pin them in place.

 Quilt the layers together: Use a sewing machine or hand-sew the layers
together using a needle and thread. You can quilt in any pattern you like –
straight lines, diagonal lines, or something more complex.

 Bind the edges: Finally, bind the edges of the quilt. Cut strips of fabric
and sew them around the edges of the quilt to create a finished look.

With these steps, you can transform your old clothes into a beautiful and
functional quilt that will provide warmth and comfort for years to come.

handmade or vintage items. These stores may be interested in selling your

selling your products on a consignment basis, which means you'll receive a

OPERATIONAL PLAN
An operational plan is a practical document which outlines the key activities
and targets an organisation will undertake during a period of time, usually
one year. It is often linked to funding agreements as well as being linked
overall to the organization’s strategic plan. An operational plan ensures you
can identify areas that aren’t generating as much revenue as they should, or
are causing losses, and can help you establish what needs to change. Without
an operational plan, you’re out of the league.
 It is very important to make an operational plan because of the following
reasons:

 Operational plans bring accountability into daily tasks

 Great way of managing other performance indicators too: shrinkage, the

number of calls or average handling time, or which of your employees
are achieving higher than their targets.

 They keep you and your business on track.

CONCLUSION
Our thrift store both offline and online will offer a great blend of qualitative and
economical goods at the same time. Our store is located on the main streets of
Delhi and Ghaziabad, which are the streets every citizen encounter while
travelling in the city, as it connects the residential communities to the offices,
institutes and recreational places. We have been able to lease a facility that is
big enough (a 5 thousand square foot facility) to fit into the design of the kind
of thrift store that we intend launching. We’ll collect the item which are in a
good condition daily and display them in well-organized separate sections in
our stores for the convenience of our buyers. Moreover, we have a quick
transport facility for the rich people who want to donate their goods to us in
large amounts. There are many children and teens in the city who desire to buy
