What Is It

Now that you have gained the basics of poultry farming, you already deserved
to deepen your knowledge about it. Read the following information attentively.

Farmers provide us foods through raising birds like in poultry production. The
skills they have in farming is one of the many needed skills not only in the Philippines
but in the world.
In poultry production, farmers practice beak trimming during 8-15 day age of
chicks as one of the prevention from pecking and injuring each other while birds are
crammed inside the pens. As part of work completion, waste disposal, maintaining
5
tools and equipment, and record keeping shall be done.

Dear learners, please read and learn.

Proper Waste Disposal after Beak Trimming
In poultry industry, one of the responsibilities of poultry raisers is the farm
waste management like waste disposal. Waste disposal is one of the most
controversial environmental issues and concerns in our society. To protect the public
health and the environment, environmental laws are created to minimize waste
disposal problem and sometimes wastes are recycled.
Wastes produced by poultry farm like beak trimmings, detached feathers, and
chicken manure must be properly disposed. It can be feed to vermi or put to farm
garbage area. Waste that can be decompose can be recycled by putting waste
directly to the vegetable garden or plants to provide fertilizer.

Maintaining Tools and Equipment

1. Water for cleaning must be safe and clean.

2. The cleaning must take place in a place designated as cleaning area.
3. When using disinfectants, farmer/farm workers must be familiar on how to use
the products using instructions on the label.
4. Always protect tools and equipment away from any chemicals.
5. Inspect tools and equipment for physical damage which might cause injuries.
6. Tools, materials, and equipment must be handle with care.
7. After sanitizing, return them in the storage properly to avoid contamination.

Record Keeping

All activities that a farm is undertaken must be kept through records. It is very
important to have references in the future for monitoring purposes. These records
also serve as a guide in checking the best practices a poultry farm made.
The two main important data to be recorded after beak trimming:
A. Data of number of birds properly trimmed
- birds with beak properly trimmed as required in debeaking
B. Data of number of birds improperly trimmed
- birds with beak not properly trimmed as required in debeaking
6

What’s More

Congratulations! You have successfully deepened your knowledge. Now, it’s

time for you to have more.
