SIX PILLARS OF CHARACTER IN A HUMAN BEING


Character defines as the totality of a person's moral and mental qualities. Such
qualities can be seen in many different ways that characterize a person. Character is
something that is inside you, which people know no matter how hard you hide it. Saying that
someone has ― character means a lot; it is the biggest compliment a person can ever have
from someone else. This, in truth, makes you confident that you are doing the right thing and
that you are at peace with yourself no matter how hard the situation will be.
Trustworthiness - Be honest. Don't deceive, cheat or steal. Be reliable. Have the
courage to do the right thing. Build a good reputation.
Respect - Treat others with respect; follow the golden rule. Be tolerant of differences.
Use good manners, not bad language. Be considerate of the feelings of others. Don't
threaten, hit or hurt anyone. Deal peacefully with anger, insults, and disagreements.
Responsibility - Always do your best. Be self-disciplined. Think before you act —
consider the consequences. Be accountable for your choices.
Fairness - Play by the rules. Take turns and share. Do not take advantage of others.
Do not blame others carelessly
Caring - Be kind, compassionate and show you care. Express gratitude. Forgive
others. Help people in need.

Citizenship - cooperate and do your share to make your school and community better.
Get involved in community affairs. Be a good neighbor. Obey laws and rules. Respect
authority. Protect the environment.
Your characteristics can be transformed into a purposeful entrepreneurial pursuit.
These include lifestyles or self- scheme and attribute.
Lifestyle can help an individual in shaping up his future entrepreneurial. It can turn
into entrepreneurial depending on how you perceive the importance of this in the economy.
Hobbies are part of a lifestyle that can be turned into a business venture.
For example, if you are fond of drawing cartoon characters, you can start a business
by selling your cartoon pictures or offering graphic service to the producer of animated films.
A trivial personal activity like chatting with friends the whole day may leak out into something
functional like putting up an internet café.
An attribute can be classified into inherent characteristics, accidental characteristics,
or characteristics by cause. These can also be become a chance into entrepreneurial
activities.
Inherent Characteristics. (Natural entrepreneur) If your family belongs to the fields of
designing like Craftsman, field marshal, or inventor or a born entrepreneur in different areas,
which will be leaned to the entrepreneurial style of endeavor, he can easily manage and
handle his own business productively and profitably.
Accidental Characteristics (Entrepreneur by chance) If you find yourself unemployed, have
difficulty in finding a job, it is the time for you to shift to another work- entrepreneurship. You
may become an entrepreneur by chance, but you will need to go on planning, preparation,
time, effort, and capital as much as possible, or if you can recycle a used product into
something creative and innovative product, you can engage in the business venture.
Characteristics by cause. (Acquired from friends) Your friends convinced you to create
something profit-making items. Because of ―pakikisama they took you out to a variety of
items made by other entrepreneurs. With this, you and your friends created marketable items
and started selling different designs of your products. So, through friends, you can venture a
business.
If you are prepared for the world of business, you should possess the desirable
characteristics of an entrepreneur.

GUIDES TO STRENGTHEN YOUR IDENTIFIED PECS


1. React positively to criticisms and open to feedback.
2. Always demonstrate a positive attitude to achieve the desired goal.
3. Always project well-balanced and strong behavior.
4. Always exercise the assertive style in your work environment.
5. Avoid being too passive and too aggressive.
6. Don't let anyone worsen your business life.
7. Prioritize your business goal rather than a personal goal to become a successful
entrepreneur.
8. Acquire specific skills for creating and maintaining a conducive work environment.
9. Be responsible for everything you do in your business.
10. Always observe business ethics in putting up a business.

Activity 1: My Traits/Skills That Make Me Bloom


Directions: Let's check your understanding. Try to design a
concept map. Indicate the traits and skills that you should
possess in order to succeed – to become a successful
entrepreneur or to become successful in your own chosen
career. For example, as a computer technician, as a beautician,
as a businessman, as a teacher, as an engineer, etc. Be
creative. (See the sample petal.)

Now that you have gained knowledge, skills, and values on how to become a
successful entrepreneur, interview a successful business owner within the community, (like
barber shop owner, sarisari store owner, welding shop owner, etc.). Focus your questions
on PECs and other business-related attributes that helped them become successful. Write
your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

1. What preparations did you make to engage in this type of business?
2. What special skills and characteristics do you have that are related with your
business?
3. Did you encounter business-related problems during the early years of your business
operation? How did you handle it?
4. What best business practices can you share with aspiring entrepreneurs?
