ALGAE BIOMASS
SIMPLE STEPS WITH HUGE IMPACT

WHAT IS ALGAE?
AL·GA/ˈALꞬƏ/

Algae are a diverse group of aquatic organisms

that have the ability to conduct photosynthesis
such as the algal blooms in the lake

ALGAE BIOMASS
It is the Algae that is processed which then
converted to be a biofuel. It is rich in nitrogen
and phosphorus which also can produce
biomethane. Also it can be fermented
hydrolysate to ethanol.

ADVANTAGES
OF ALGAE BIOMASS

~ More productive than other forms of biomass

~ work with the current distribution system
~ Grows at high level efficiency ~ a renewable source
~ Helps to reduce C02 ~ Produces numerous products

DISADVANTAGES
LESS POLLUTION, MORE BENEFITS

~ Higher production cost ~ Has concern about monoculture

~ requires high level of fertilizer
~ needs more time for biofuel ~ requires significant water resources
~ not always an energy efficient product.

PRETREATMENT PROCESS
The algae biomass is pretreated with an acid for
example we use acetic acid or CH3COOH. distilled water
was added first before the acid to prevent the splashing
of concentrated acid from the flask due to highly
exothermic reaction. the use of this pretreatment
process is to reduce or release the fermentable sugar
which resulting in more ethanol productivity indirectly.
