Overview
Application
Orthodontic brackets are an important part of a fixed brace as they hold the wire which moves the teeth.
Description
Modern orthodontic brackets have evolved from the standard edgewise bracket developed by Edward H Angle. Depending
on the type of fixed brace, brackets can be attached to the front or back of a tooth and come in a variety of configurations
including, standard, T-slot and double vertical designs. Here we focus on metallic brackets.
Classification
FDA Class I
Design
Design requirements
The bracket must have adequate strength and hardness in order to deliver the required force. The surface of the material
should be smooth so to minimize friction with the wire and avoid plaque deposition. It should also have high corrosion
resistance and good biocompatibility.
Deployment method
Once the surface of the tooth has been prepared, brackets are bonded directly to the tooth using dental cement or onto a
metal band, usually placed around the last molars. A metal archwire is guided into the brackets and secured with elastic
rubber bands.
