Features and Benefits
MidrangeVertical Self-Contained air conditioners, available in 3 to 15-tons, are single package units
designed for low cost installation in the conditioned space or equipment room. Durable
construction, strict quality control, and demanding factory testing ensure reliability from start-up
through years of operation. All units are shipped fully factory assembled and tested — thereby
reducing field labor, installation time, and costs.
Units are easy to convert from vertical to horizontal discharge arrangements. Unit return
convertible for front or rear return air offers flexibility to match most building configurations.
Discharge fan section removable to allow passage through standard height doorway.
Discharge can be either free or ducted. Power and water connections are available from either side
of the unit adding to the unit flexibility.
Standard Features
• 3 through 15-ton commercial self-contained units
• Water-cooled or air-cooled condensing applications
• Fits through standard 36-inch door. Discharge fan section removable to allow passage through
standard height doorway (on 10-15 ton units).
• Single point power connection
• Single point water connection on water-cooled units
• Both water and power connections are available on either side of the unit
• Rugged 1” double wall foamed panel construction
• Positively-sloped stainless steel IAQ drain pan
• Front or rear return air openings
• Vertical and horizontal discharge arrangements
• Decorative front return air grille on 3 - 7.5 tons
• ETL/CETL listing on standard unit
• AHRI certified performance
• All compressors are scroll type
• All remote air-cooled units have crankcase heaters as standard
• Variable pitch sheaves allow field adjustment of airflow
• High and low pressure cutout switches

Application Considerations
CTA Unit Location
Unobstructed condenser airflow is essential to maintain capacity and operating efficiency. When
determining unit placement, give careful consideration to assure sufficient airflow across the
condenser coils. Avoid these two detrimental conditions: warm air recirculation and coil starvation.
Both warm air recirculation and coil starvation cause reductions in unit efficiency and capacity
because of the higher head pressure associated with them. In more severe cases, nuisance unit
shutdowns will result from excessive head pressures.
Clearance
Ensure vertical condenser air discharge is unobstructed. While it is difficult to predict the degree
of warm air recirculation, a unit installed with a ceiling or other obstruction above it will experience
a capacity reduction that will reduce the maximum ambient operation. Nuisance high head
pressure trip outs may also occur. The coil inlet must also be unobstructed. A unit installed closer
than the minimum recommended distance to a wall or other vertical riser will experience a
combination of coil starvation and warm air recirculation. This may result in unit capacity and
efficiency reductions, as well as possible excessive head pressures.
Reference the service clearance section for recommended lateral distances.
Ambient Limitations
Standard ambient control allows operation down to 45°F (7.2°C) with cycling of condenser fans.
Units with the low ambient kit option are capable of starting and operating in ambient temperatures
down to 0°F (-17.8°C). Optional low ambient kit units use a condenser fan motor speed controller
that controls condenser capacity by modulating condenser airflow in response to saturated
condenser temperature or ambient temperature. Maximum cataloged ambient temperature
operation of a standard condenser is 125°F (46.1°C). Operation at design ambient above 125°F can
result in excessive head pressures. For operation above 125°F, contact the localTrane sales office.
PKG-PRC012Q-EN 5
Selection Procedure
Follow this process to select a midrange self-contained unit.
Step 1. Load
Determine the load requirements for heating and cooling, include outside air. UseTrane’s load
estimate program or any standard method.
Selection Example
Design conditions for a water-cooled unit with airflow = 2,000 cfm at 0.5-inch duct static pressure.
Entering air temperature = 80/67°F
Total gross capacity required = 66,400 Btu/h
Entering water temperature = 85°F
Leaving water temperature = 95°F
Unit Selection
Tentatively select a 5-ton unit, model SCWJ050. Refer to Table 19, p. 26 to obtain gross total and
sensible unit capacities, gpm, and leaving water temperature at nominal conditions:
Total capacity = 68.1 MBh
Sensible capacity = 49.2 MBh
Water flow rate = 16.2 gpm
Leaving water temperature = 95°F (all capacity tables assume 10° T)
The SCWJ050 meets the total and sensible capacities and other design requirements.
Refer to the fan data Table 4, p. 12 to determine approximate brake horsepower and fan rpm:
Fan brake horsepower = 0.73 bhp
Fan rpm = 1020 rpm
Determine net capacities by subtracting fan motor heat from gross capacities:
3.98 X 0.73 bhp = 2.9 MBh
Net total capacity = 68.1 MBh – 2.9 MBh = 65.2 MBh
Net sensible capacity = 49.2MBh - 2.9 MBh = 46.3 MBh
