Development of an Automatic Irrigation System

1. Context
Agriculture is, nowadays, a critical sector in our development as a society. Not only it
belongs and significantly contributes to the world's economy, it matters too because a
lot of different ailments are brought to us and our families by this sector. In recent
years a lot of different factors such as climate change, water scarcity and
overpopulation are putting enormous pressure on agricultural systems to perform at
their best capabilities and as fast as possible. However, one of the first causes of
water wasting in our society is, nonetheless, the agricultural sector. Being this sector
of such importance brings the necessity of saving water to the front, being contrarian
as for what is known for. Then, the development of an automatic watering system
aims to search for a solution to this problem and optimize as much as we can the use
of water and improve agricultural productivity.

2. Motivation
The motivation that we found in developing an automatic irrigation system is to
improve and make more efficient the usage of water.
Whether it is to help save water, fight against climate change or meet the increase in
the demand for food.
The use of the irrigation system (in agriculture), can save large amounts of water that
nowadays are being wasted. We can use the water that we are saving in other fields
that can be useful. So, we are contributing to creating a more sustainable world and
increasing the efficiency of the usage of water.

3. Problem identification/justification
Some of the problems that we have on the current irrigation systems are:

- Low efficiency of watering in agriculture: with manual irrigation, we have the

problem that we can irrigate too much a plantation. Or we can have the
problem that we water less another plantation. This causes a big wastage of
water.
- Great cost in production: if the irrigation system is manual, it leads to a much
slower and less efficient system that causes an increase in labor costs.

- Limited adaptability: Current systems can not adapt to climatic conditions,

since it is all manual and needs an enormous difficulty in adapting the
plantations. This causes low efficiency and a lot of water waste.
The previous problems can be solved using an automatic irrigation system. Which
contributes to creating a sustainable society that uses the water properly and fights
against the scarcity of water in the world.

4. Concept of solution
Our proposed solution will make use of a humidity sensor to monitor soil moisture.
Once certain criteria is met, the device will send a trigger to activate the watering
procedure and a certain quantity of water determined by the surface of soil to irrigate
will be dropped from above to both hydrate the plants and water their roots, making
the irrigation schedule flexible and based on the real-time data collected by the
sensors.

5. Idea on solution's success measures

The success measures of our automated irrigation system could be measured on

different performances:

- Use of water: the system should reduce the waste of water and make an
efficient use of it compared to traditional irrigation systems.
- Crop yield: the quality of the crops shouldn’t differ or be better than the crops
obtained by traditional methods.
- Installation and maintenance cost: the total cost of installation and utilization
should be around the cost of present methods, being less if possible to make
a more economic approach.
- Helping the environment: our system should contribute to make a respectable
use of the environment and produce as less wastes as possible.
- Adaptable: our system needs to be adapted to a wide range of different crops
and be able to cover some general necessities.
