Introduction

The Kuala Lumpur Hospital or commonly known as HKL (Hospital Kuala Lumpur) has 53
different departments and units. These include the administration & finance department, the
pharmaceutical department, training and research, 28 clinical departments and 12 clinical support
services.

Hospital Kuala Lumpur is now the largest hospital under the Ministry of Health of Malaysia and is
considered to be one of the biggest in Asia. It is a government tertiary referral hospital, located on
150 acres of prime land with 83 wards and 2300 beds.

of 7 000 workers with almost 100 professions in various fields and disciplines. Out of the total
number of staff, there are about 200 consultants and specialists, 500 medical officers and registrars,
32 matrons, 221 sisters (ward managers), 3,101 registered nurses, 253 community nurse, 6 trained
assistant nurses and 1 trained mid-wives. The remaining staffs are pharmacists, tutors, assistant
pharmacists, medical assistants, administrative personnel and hospital attendants.
History

1870 : It was developed as a district hospital comprising of 3 wards i.e., the Tai Wah Ward, the
Choudhry Ward and the Malay Ward.

1920 : Upgraded to 25 wards (1st. class in Bangsar, 2nd. class and 3rd. class).

1962 : Development of HKL from Phase I to Phase IV. The development of the various phases
were as follows:
Phase I (1962 - 1968): Maternity Hospital, North Ward Block, Radiotherapy Department and
Hostels for staff were built.

Phase II (1968 - 1972): South Ward Block, Neurology Institute, Surgical Block, Radiology
Block, National Blood Transfusion Centre and more hostels were
added.

Phase III (1972 - 1973): Specialist clinics, Outpatient Department and Doctor's hostel were
constructed.
Phase IV-A (1973 - 1974): Trainee Nurses hostel and Clubhouse added.

Phase IV-B (1975): Orthopaedic Institute, Urology Institute, Artificial Limb Centre and
Radiology Block built.

The last phase of HKL was completed at the cost of RM 77 million.

1973 : HKL started functioning as a teaching hospital for UKM medical students.

1986 - 1988: Repairs and refurbishment of old building (Wooden Block) were performed.

1989 - 1992: Paediatric Institute was constructed.


1994 - 1997 (Phase II) - Upgrading of the Institute of Radiotherapy, Oncology and Nuclear
Medicine.

2013 : Specialist Complex & Ambulatory Care Centre (SCACC) is located along Jalan Pahang and
next to Institute of Medical Research (IMR). The building consist of 16 clinical departments,
support services such as pharmacy, pathology, radiology, Central Sterile Supply Unit (CSSU) and
allied health services. SCACC providing 30 beds for daycare patients, 184 consultations rooms, 7
seminar rooms and CRC room.

2015 : Multi-storey Car Park was initially open to the public on 15 February 2015. This building is
located near Maternity Hospital. The building consist of seven (7) level of car park, gymnasium,
tennis court, cafeteria and PABX building. The car park was built with light parking system and
automated calculation of available space as well as panic button for security system.

OBJECTIVES

 To provide quality patient oriented service based on humanistic values emphasing customer
satisfaction and encompasing promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative aspects;
 To provide health education service to its clientele and provide post basic and continuing
medical education to its staff to promote professionalism;
 To instils excellent work culture and to create a conducive environment to deliver quality
services;
 To make KLH a centre of excellence and national referral centre,
 To establish KLH as a clinical research centre.

 primary services to be resited outside KLH
bed strength reduced from 2585 to 1300
 Remaining land area to be rebuild into a referral and tertiary care centre for a hospital of 1300
beds only.
