Part A ( 25 marks )
Answer all question in this section

1. A certain medical disease occur in 1% of the population. A simple screening procedure is

available and in 8 out of 10 cases where the patient has the disease, it produces a positive
result. If the patient does not have the disease, there is still a 0.05 chance that the test will give
a positive result.
a) Draw a tree diagram to represent the given information. [2 marks]
b) Hence, find the probability that a randomly selected individual
i) does not have the disease but gives a positive result in the screening test
[2 marks]
ii) gives a positive result on the test. [3 marks]

2. A discrete random variable has a probability distribution function given by

where is a constant.

a) Determine the value of . [3 marks]

b) Construct the probability distribution table for . [2 marks]

c) Find the mean and variance for . [4 marks]

3. The distribution of the number of machine breakdowns in a factory in one day is a

Poisson variable with mean 4.
a) Find the probability that
i) exactly 3 machines breakdown on a particular day [2 marks]
ii) at most 4 machines breakdown on a particular day [2 marks]
iii) between 20 to 24 machines breakdown in a week [3 marks]

b) An auto repair company places 3 of their technicians to provide assistance in

machine breakdowns in a factory everyday. Find the probability that on a particular
day the company could not provide such assistance to all the machines which
breakdown.
