N1 は N2 じゃ ありません
じゃ ありません (ja arimasen) is the negative form of です (desu).
May be equivalent to is not, are not, and am not.
For formal speech or writing, では ありません (dewa arimasen) is
used instead.
たとえば (Tatoeba):
1. サントスさん は がくせい じゃ ありません。
Santosusan wa gakusei ja arimasen.
(Mr. Santos is not a student)
2. かりなさん は エンジニア では ありません。
Karinasan wa enjinia dewa arimasen.
(Ms. Karina is not an engineer.)
3. グレイスさん は がくせい じゃ ありません。
Gureisusan wa gakusei ja arimasen.
(Ms. Grace is not a student.)
4. トマス さん は スペインじん じゃ ありません。
Tomasusan wa supein-jin ja arimasen.
(Mr. Thomas is not a Spanish.)
Sか
Particle か (ka) is used to express the speaker’s doubt, question,
uncertainty, etc. A question is formed by simply adding か to the end
of the sentence. The question ends with a rising intonation.
たとえば (Tatoeba):
1. ミラーさん は アメリカじん です か。
Is Mr. Miller an American?
...はい、アメリカじん です。
...Yes, an American (...Yes, he is.)
2. ミラーさん は せんせい です か。
Is Mr. Miller a teacher?
...いいえ、 せんせい じゃ ありません。
...No, not a teacher (...No, he is not)
3. あなた は イタリヤ じんです か?
Anata wa itariajin desu ka? (Are you Italian?)
いいえ、イタリヤじん じゃ ありません.
Iie, Itariajin ja arimasen (No, I am not. / No, not Italian.)
4. パテルさん は ぎんこういん です か?
Paterusan wa ginkouin desu ka?
(Is Mr. Patel a bank employee?)
はい、 ぎんこういん です.
Hai, ginkouin desu.
(Yes, he is. / Yes, a bank employee.)
Nも
も (mo) is added after a topic instead of は (wa) when the statement
about the topic is the same as the previous topic. May equivalent to
also.
たとえば (Tatoeba):
1. ミラーさん は かいしゃいん です。
グプタさん も かいしゃいん です.
Mr. Miller is a company employee.
Mr. Gupta is also a company employee.
2. シャロンさん は がくせい です。ケネトさん も がくせい です.
Ms. Sharon is a student. Mr. Kenneth is also a student.
3. わたし は いしゃ です。 ひなたさん も いしゃ です。
I am a doctor. Ms. Hinata is also a doctor.
4. カレン さん は かいしゃいん です。
ピオロ さん も かいしゃいんです。
Ms. Karen is a company employee.
Mr. Piolo is also a company employee.
N1 の N2
の (no) is used to connect two nouns. N1 modifies N2. In Lesson 1,
N1 is an organization or some kind of group to which N2 belongs.
May be equivalent to of but in reverse order. の (no) indicates
ownership.
たとえば (Tatoeba):
1. ミラーさん は IMC の しゃいん です。
Mr. Miller is an IMC employee.
2. テレサさん は SLCV の がくせい です。
Ms. Teresa is an SLCV student.
3. ゲラルドさん は Net 25 の しゃいん です。
Mr. Gerald is a Net 25 employee.
4. あいか さん は SMDC の エンギニヤ です。
Aikasan wa SMDC no enjinia desu.
Ms. Aika is an SMDC engineer.
~さん
さん (san) is added to the name of the listener or a third person to
show the speaker’s respect to the person. It should never be used
with the speaker’s own name.
たとえば (Tatoeba):
1. すずき: ミラーさんは がくせい です か。
Suzuki: Are you a student? (Is Mr. Miller a student?)
2. ミラー: いいえ、 (わたし は) かいしゃいん です。
Miller: No. I am a company employee.
(No. a company employee.)
