TONY TAN CAKTIONG
Tony Tan Caktiong was born to
Chinese immigrant parents from
Fujian, China on January 5, 1953.

His father was a chef who worked


for a Buddhist temple in Binondo.

His father's skill as a chef enabled


him to land a job offer managing
a restaurant in Davao.

Tony was able to attend
University of Santo Tomas in
Manila thanks to the family's labor
of love.

Toni enrolled in a course in


chemical engineering and
graduated in 1975.

Doctorate in Business
Administration by UST in
2018

In a visit to the Magnolia Ice


Cream Plant with his friend, then
22 year old Tony got interested
into a poster advertising to
franchise an ice cream house for
only 17,500 pesos per branch in
1975.

Their family then saved to invest
their money amounting 350,000
pesos to purchase 2 franchise
branch of the ice cream house.

Their two ice cream house army


were named Cubao Ice Cream
House and Quiapo Ice Cream
House.

After 2 years of only serving Ice
cream, Tony expanded their menu
by serving hamburgers and fried
chicken

Not for long, chicken, hamburgers


and ice cream were selling very
good, lines started to pile up and
success became a continuous matter
for them.

When the food items became more


popular than ice cream, the family
decided to convert the ice cream
parlor into a fast-food restaurant,
which became the first Jollibee
outlet in 1978.

Tony then decided to rebrand and


chose a "bee" as their icon as
bees are known for being hard
workers and as Filipinos are
known for their "happy culture"
Tony chose the word "Jolly"
which birthed the restaurant we
know today as "Jollibee"

Jollibee was formally inaugurated
in 1978 and serving Filipino comfort
foods for their customers is one of
the key strengths they have.

In the same year, the Jollibee


Foods Corporation was
incorporated and by the end of that
year 7 branches have been opened The first franchised

in Metro Manila. Jollibee outlet opened in


1979 in Santa Cruz,
Manila.

Jollibee has thrived over the years;
as of right now, depending on the
size of the store, each franchise
has a market worth ranging from
35 million to 55 million pesos.

Jollibee started opening locations


all over the world in addition to
claiming the top rank in the
Philippines' fast food chain market.

locations, the Jollibee Food
Corporation was able to
purchase and franchise several
fast food chains in the country
and across the globe...

Greenwich was one of


the first acquisition
made by Tony which
happened in the year
1994

Jollibee started opening locations all
over the world in addition to claiming
the top rank in the Philippines' fast
food chain market.

As of December 2021, JFC had a total


of about 1,500 Jollibee outlets
worldwide, with restaurants in
Southeast Asia, the Middle East, East
Asia (Hong Kong, Macau), North
America, and Europe (Spain, Italy, UK).
