What Is Journal ??
• Journal is a scholarly publication containing articles written by researchers,
professors and other experts. It focus on a specific discipline or field of study.

• Journals are published on a regular basis (monthly, quarterly, etc.)

Types Of Journals
• Scholarly and Research Journals : Book- The Journal of Marriage and Family, published by
Wiley-Blackwell on behalf of the National Council on Family Relations. The journal covers
critical discussion on all aspects of marriage, close relationships, and families.

• Professional, Trade & Industry Journals : Book- Mechanics & Industry

• Popular and News Magazines : Book - TIME, Newsweek

Journal Impact Factor
The Journal Impact Factor is defined as the number of citations in current year to
items published in the previous two years, divided by the total number of items
published in those same two years.

IMPACT FACTOR = NO. OF CITATIONS

TOTAL NO. ARTICLES

Impact Factor: It is the average number of times articles from the journal published in the
past two years have been cited in the JCR year.

e.g. The journal XYZ has an 2020 impact factor of 2.0 means that, on average, the articles
published in 2018 and 2019 was quoted in 2020.

NOTE :

• IM PACT = EFFECT
• CITATION = ENTRIES IN A LIST OF REFERENCES AT
• THE END OF AN ARTICLE, CHAPTER, BOOK, ETC
• JCR = JOURNAL CITATION REPORT
• 2.0 = THE ARTICLES PUBLISHED PNE OR TWO YEAR AGO
AND HAVE BEEN CITIED TWO TIM ES.
• CITED = TO TELL READER THAT THE WORK CAM E FROM DIFF.
SOURCE.
Calculation Of Journal Impact Factor

For example, the impact factor 2020 for a journal would be calculated as follows:

A= the number of times articles published in 2018-19 were cited in indexed journals
during 2020

B = the number of articles, reviews, proceedings or

notes published in 2018-2019

• Impact factor 2020 = A/B

IMPACT FACTOR = No. Of Citations in 2019 of article published in 2017-18

2020-JCR No. Of Articles published in the Journal in 2017-18
Computation of Journal Impact Factor
Computation
C1+C2
S1+S2
• C1 denotes the number of citations received by S1 source items in the year Y

• C2 denotes the number of citations received by S2 source items in the year Y

• S1 denotes the number of source items published in the journal J in the year Y-1

• S2 denotes the number of source items published in the journal J in the year Y-2

Example
•Suppose the journal j has published 32 and 36 sources in 2017 and 2018 respectively.
These source items have received respectively 40 and 28 citations in 2019.Now the
impact factor of the journal j will be

Result = 40+28/32+36=1
Following Key Points Related to Journal Impact Factor

• Journal Impact Factor cannot be calculated for new journals. I mean

"the impact factor of a journal is calculated by dividing the number of
current year citations to the source items published in that journal
during the previous two years", hence impact factor can be calculated
after completing the minimum of 3 years of publication.

• Journal Impact Factor will be a quotient factor only and will not be a
quality factor.

• Journal Impact Factor will not be related to quality of content and

quality of peer review, it is only a measure of the frequency with
which the "average article" in a journal

• Has been cited in a particular year or period.

Why Journal Impact?
• Librarians - can support selection or removal of journals from their
collections, and determine how long to keep each journal in the collection
before archiving it.

• Publishers and melt - can determine journals' influence in the marketplace

and review editorial functions.

• Authors - can identify the most appropriate, influential journals in which to

publish, as well as confirm the status of journals in which they have
published.

• Professors and Students - can discover where to find th current reading list
in their respective fields.
