OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the discussion, student should be able to:

A. Explain the meaning and importance of washing clothes,

B. Determine the different ways of washing clothes
C. And, identify the two ways of washing clothes

What is washing clothes and why is it importance?

Washing is a method of cleaning, usually with water and soap or detergent. Washing and then rinsing both
body and clothing is an essential part of good hygiene and health.

Why does washing of clothes important?

Regular washing of clothes and bedding, helps to remove any bacteria, dirt, fleas, mites and other irritants or
infection. Washing of clothes and bedding can help reduce the incidence of infectious diseases, such as
diarrheal disease, respiratory infections, scabies and other skin infections.

Two ways of washing clothes

Automatic/washing machine

Washing Clothes using a machine.

Hand wash

Hand washing involves manually removing soils with water, detergent, and a gentle squeezing action. A care
label that calls for machine washing in a delicate or gentle cycle indicates soils in the garment can be
removed with water, detergent or soap, slow agitation, and reduced time in a washing machine.

Washing Machine Cycles

HAND WASH- You may have a hand wash cycle on your washing machine, which can be used for clothes that
have ‘hand wash only’ listed on the fabric care label. It’s suitable for very delicate garments like silk, soft
cottons, delicate linens, wool garments made from thin wools like angora, or garments with sequins or
beads. The low speeds of agitation and low speed spins help prevent stretching and ripping of the fabric.

COTTONS- This is suitable for cotton garments or clothes that require a high agitation wash, like bed sheets
and towels. This usually comes with a high-speed spin setting, which makes it a little harsher on clothes and
is why it’s not recommended for more delicate fabrics.

QUICK WASH- This is ideal if you need your washing done in under half an hour, but it’s usually only
recommended for lightly soiled clothes. This cycle has a shortened wash cycle and a high-speed spin cycle, to
also speed up the drying time as well. This is not recommended for delicate items, like silks, lingerie, or
anything with beading.

SYNTHETICS- This offers a medium agitation wash often coupled with a low-speed spin that’s best for
synthetic fabrics, such as your favorite acrylic blended jumper or polyester sportswear.

STEPS ON DOING A PROPER HAND WASHING OF CLOTHES

1. Pretreat stains with a spot-cleaning solution.

A solid laundry soap bar is a great option for unexpected stains on a garment, as well as the stained
collar on a T-shirt.
2. Fill a sink or bowl with water. Warm water is best.
3. Pour in a small amount of liquid laundry soap. A delicate formula such as Woolite is best to support a
gentle cleaning. Agitate the water and soap to mix.
4. Submerge your garment(s) and use only your hands to gently wash. Then, leave garments in the
soapy water to sit for up to 30 minutes.
5. Drain dirty water, replace with clean warm water, and gently rinse. You might find it effective to
swish the clothes in the water or press them against the sides of the sink or bowl. Avoid wringing the
material, which can damage it (just like what happens in the washer). Replace the water as needed
until the soap is removed.
6. Dry items thoroughly on a flat towel. One effective way of removing the water is to roll the garment
into the towel to squeeze out moisture. Ultimately, you’ll want to focus on drying it flat or hang-
drying it on a hanger or clothesline, whichever works best for the garment and its desired shape.
