Matter-It can be classified into substances (elements and compounds) and mixtures.

Substance is a form of matter that has a definite composition and distinct properties.
All elements found in the periodic table and all compounds are therefore substances.

Homogenous – “homo” is a prefix meaning one or uniform. there is ONLY ONE PHASE that can be seen.

Solutions – a homogenous mixture of two or more substances whose particles are of atomic or
molecular size.
2 Parts of solutions
1. Solute –the substance that is dissolved
2. Solvent –the substance that dissolves the solute.

Heterogenous –meaning two or more phases or unequal.

B. Suspensions – are heterogeneous mixtures that contain large particles that tend to settle on standing.

C. Colloid – mixtures whose particles are larger than the molecules in a solution but smaller than the
particles forming suspensions.
