I. About the Artist
Nestor Garcia Leynes, Sr (February 26, 1922 – March 18, 2016) was a Filipino
realist painter. Leynes is regarded as a leader of the Philippine "Magic Realist"
movement. He was born in Santa Cruz, Manila. Leynes was born on February 26,
1922, in Santa Cruz, Manila. His parents were Ricardo Leynes, a doctor, and
Enriqueta Garcia, a registered nurse. He had three brothers and a sister. Leynes had
already taken art classes in elementary and secondary school. He graduated from
Arellano High School and enrolled at the University of the Philippines' College of
Fine Arts. His studies were cut short in his fourth year due to the Japanese invasion
of the Philippines during World War II. He married Amalia Alcantara, a childhood
neighbor, and sweetheart, two days after the Pearl Harbor attack. Because he was
already married, Leynes never returned to school after the war and thus never
graduated. He found work as an illustrator for Ramon Roces Publications. He
created illustrations for magazines such as Liwayway and Philippine comics. He was
hired as a staff artist for the Philippine Advertising Council. Later, he was appointed
executive vice president of the J. Romero and Associates Advertising Agency
Leynes returned to painting full-time after retiring in 1980 at the age of fifty-eight. He
died in March 2016 at the age of 94.

IV. Meaning of the artwork.


 The scene depicted in Leynes' painting was a representation of a classic Filipino
tradition and practice.
 It depicted an early times routine and traditional way of preparing food.
 The authenticity of the action is superbly conveyed, as it is well-known to
Filipinos.
 It depicts a Filipino method of removing rice chaff with a winnowing basket.
 It demonstrates how a mother takes good care of her child.
 All of his artwork depicts the Filipino way of life, including the fruit vendor and the
girl harvesting rice.

V. Process, Material, and Techniques of producing the artwork.


 Leynes used shades of brown, white and black to capture the scene vividly.
 Realistic colors and visual texture are the dominant elements in the painting.
 Mutually, they create genuine photographic art that seemed to look real and
authentic.
 The color scheme contributed a large impact on making this picture a realistic
one.
 The use of colors heightens the realistic effect and evokes a feeling of
belongingness in representing our own tradition and way of life.
