IV. PROCEDURES
A. Preparatory The teacher shall call the class into order by starting with a prayer,
Activities followed by the checking of attendance and a short energizer.

Recall:

Momentum depends on two factors, mass and velocity. Two cars of

the same mass but different velocities will also have different
momenta.
B. Motivation Consider the two identical cars on the picture. Car A is traveling at 80
km/h while Car B is traveling at 30 km/h.

Which of the two cars would be more difficult to stop?

Answer: Car A, being faster
Which of the two cars has more momentum?
Answer: Car A, being faster is more difficult to stop. It has more
momentum.

C. Activity Let us practice computing for momentum.

Given the following data, solve for momentum using the formula
p = mv.

D. Analysis 1. Which object has the greatest momentum? Answer:

Basketball Player
2. Which object has the least momentum? Answer: Bird
E. Abstraction On what two factors does momentum depend on? It depends on
mass and velocity. The word momentum (plural, momenta) is a latin
word means “movement” or “inertia in motion”. Momentum can be
defined as “ mass in motion”. Operationally, momentum is defined as
the product of mass and the velocity of an object. In equation,

p = mv

where p = is the momentum

m = is the mass
v = is the velocity

Moving objects have velocities which can be measured directly or

indirectly. For stationary objects where the velocity is zero, the
momentum is also zero.

We can derive the equation based on what is being asked in the

problem. Please see the table below.

F. Application Group the class into 10. Answer the following question and write the
answer in a manila paper.

1. A bowling ball whose mass is 4.0 kg is rolling at a rate of 2.5 m/s.

What is its momentum? Answer: 10 kg. m/s
2. A skateboard is rolling at a velocity of 3.0 m/s with a momentum of
6.0 kg-m/s. What is its mass? Answer: 2 kg
3. A pitcher throws a baseball with a mass of 0.5 kg and a
momentum of 10 kg-m/s. What is its velocity? Answer: 20 m/s

G. Practical A system is made up of three bodies with their respective velocities:

•body B of mass 2.0 kg moving west at 3.0 m/s
Answer pB = mv = (2.0 kg) (3.0 m/s) = 6.0 kg m/s west

•body C of mass 5.2 kg moving west at 2.5 m/s.

Answer pC = mv = (5.2 kg) (2.5 m/s) = 13 kg m/s west

What is the momentum of the system?

The resultant momentum is 16 kg m/s west.

Every moving object has momentum. Momentum is a vector quantity,

with a direction the same as the velocity. There is no special unit for
H. Generalization
momentum just the units mass multiplied by velocity.

I. Evaluation How fast must Superman run to have the same momentum as a
2500 kg train moving at 4.5 m/s in the same direction? Assume that
the mass of Superman is 250 kg.

a. Solve for momentum of the train:

p= mv = (2 500 kg) (4.5 m/s) = 11 250 kg m/s

b. Solve for velocity of Superman:

Momentum of the Train = Momentum of Superman = 11, 250 kg m/s

p 11 250 kg m/s
v= = =45 m/s
m 250 kg

J. Additional activities There are twenty students in a school bus with a mass of 2500 kg
for application or moving with a speed of 4.25 m/s. (a) What is the momentum of the
remediation bus and its passengers if the average mass of the student is 1225
(assignment) kg? (b) If 8 students get off from the bus, what is the momentum of
the bus its passenger if it continues to move with the same speed?

Solution:
a. m = 2 250 kg + (125 kg x 20 students) = 4 750 kg
p= m v = (4 750 kg) (4.25 m/s)
= 20 187.5 kg m/s ≈ 20 200 kg m/s

b. Number of students left in the bus = 20 – 8 = 12 students

m = 2 250 kg + (125 kg x 12 students) = 3 750 kg
p=mv = (3 750 kg) (4.25 m/s)
= 15 937.5 kg m/s ≈ 15 900 kg m/s

1. Which has more momentum, a huge truck that is not moving or a small toy cart that is moving?
Answer: a small toy cart that is moving
2. A moving car has momentum. If it moves twice as fast, its momentum would be __________ as much.
Answer: twice
3. Two cars, one twice as heavy as the other, moves down a hill at the same time. The heavier car would
have a _________ momentum.
Answer: greater

C. A system is made up of three bodies with their respective velocities:

 body A of mass 1.5 kg and moving east at 2.0 m/s
 body B of mass 2.0 kg moving west at 3.0 m/s
 body C of mass 5.2 kg moving west at 2.5 m/s.
What is the momentum of the system?
Solution:
The momentum of the system must be the vector sum of the momentum of the bodies making
uo the system.
pA = mv = (1.5 kg) (2.0 m/s) = 3.0 kg m/s east
pB = mv = (2.0 kg) (3.0 m/s) = 6.0 kg m/s west
pC = mv = (5.2 kg) (2.5 m/s) = 13 kg m/s west

The resultant momentum is 16 kg m/s west.

p= mv = (2 500 kg) (4.5 m/s) = 11 250 kg m/s
b. Solve for velocity of Superman:
Momentum of the Train = Momentum of Superman = 11, 250 kg m/s

p 11 250 kg m/s
v= = =45 m/s
m 250 kg
