Uninstalling drivers........................................................................................................................... 4

Device driver installation via the Found New Hardware Wizard has been the standard route to
reliable device operation for a number of years. However, it can be long and frustrating to end
users.
Microsoft have recognised this and have made a collection of device driver installation tools
available for Windows 2000 and later. This can allow drivers to be available on the PC for loading
when a matching device is connected for the first time.

This document will only cover pre-installation using the DPInst tool as this is the simplest and
most generic method.

Installing drivers

Please log in into your PC as an administrator to install drivers, othervise you will see only error
message (see picture below)

Click on the “Auto - Install…” button.

Depends on your PC’s security settings, you might see “Open File - Security Warning” dialog box.
Click on the “Run” button. (see picture below)

“VCP Driver
Installer.exe” will
extract
DPInst.exe and
driver files into
your temporary
folder and start
wizard. (see

Click on
the “Next”
button.
The
wizard will
start

installation of the drivers.

2
If one or
both
drivers
have(has)
not been
installed

successfully, you will have to use the standard and reliable route via the Found New Hardware
Wizard. Please read the manual from this CD. Manuals are available in Word document and
Portable document formats.

Uninstalling drivers

DPInst creates entries in the Add/Remove Programs utility for removing device drivers.
One entry is created for each device driver installed, so in the case of the FTDI VCP driver two
entries will be created. These are named "Windows Driver Package - FTDI CDM Driver Package"
(see picture below).
3
Removing the driver using these entries will remove files from the driver store and uninstall any
device which is connected during the uninstall, but other "phantom" devices (i.e. installed on the
system but not connected) will not be uninstalled.

The regular Add/Remove Programs entry for the FTDI driver will also be present if you have used
the drivers (see picture below).

This will remove phantom devices and ensure that all remnants of the driver and registry settings
are deleted.
