I. Context and Rationale

Mathematics subject often said to be difficult subject especially the children experience

Covid 19 Pandemic that affects their learning skills. Teachers most of the times heard

conversations between learners that they really find difficult times towards the subject. In

this situation, it seems like mathematics subject made their students life restricted.

According to Lev Vygotsky (2000), modular learning is form of distance learning that used

self-learning modules (SLM) based on the most essential learning competencies (MELCS).

The module include sections on motivation and assessment that serve as a complete guide

of both teacher’s and students’ desired competencies.

Learners said they enjoy doing activities during classes’ time. According to Tambychik

et., al (2010), learners can be seen struggling especially when numbers are being shuffled

with different steps. Thus, mathematics is not a topic but a process.

Learning is best conceive as a process, not in terms of outcomes. To improve learning

in higher education, the primary focus should be engaging students in a process that best

enhances their learning a process that includes feedback on the effectiveness of their

learning effort. (Kolb, A. Y., and Kolb, D. A. (2009).

Learners feel confidence to do things mostly if there are someone who cares and

believe in their own capabilities. Being a teacher is not only mean for feeding them

knowledge. The teacher inner passion in which seen by them plays a lot and that is a big

factor of gaining confidence and trust of what they could do. Giving them, a chance to

experience doing things in their own idea mean a lot in everybody’s growth. Additionally,

providing constant feedback help them to lead on building step by step process of growing

to improve their skills and capabilities in their own means.

As a facilitator of learning, teachers’ must take the step by step process in order to make

the learners may not feel uncertainly but instead learning while enjoying, and it enhanced

them to build their vocabulary to learn mathematics. In that case, you are building a self-

reliant learner.
According to Tam, M. (2000), distance learning provides a unique context in which to

infuse constructivist principles where the learners expected to function as self-motivated,

self-directed, interactive, collaborative participants in their learning experiences by virtue of

their physical location.

Distance learning could be very beneficial mostly to those learners who take education

for granted in the sense that they did not take it seriously. This new style of learning

wherein there is no teacher facing the learners teaches them to learn. The best way that the

teacher can do, is to spend time to communicate, and assist them in a way of fostering care

during in a new normal.

Furthermore, the first institutions of a child is to learn in his/her home. The learners

passes and learn most of the time with the help of their parents and the environment

provided to the learners in their home. Parents play a vital role in the education of their

child. They make scholastic achievements than those who are ignore. If the parents take

care of following things, they can improve the education of their children. Parental

involvement in children’s learning is a key factor in improving children’s academic

attainment and achievements, as well as their overall behavior and attendance (Carbonel,

2013).

Parent’s role in the entire journey of their child’s education is one of the biggest attribute

and contributory factors in their success, it is very important that all parents know their part

in the learning process in order for the continuity of learning of the learners.

Lastly, according to Santiago (2010), one of the primary task of a teacher is to

determine the best approach and make appeals that will be lasting. From this, it can be

drawn that the teaching must always be integrating for children and ensure that not every

child would miss his /her class, and he/she becomes very eager to attend school because

of the learning he/she will gain.

II. Action Research Question

This study aims to determine the effect of S.T.A.R. methods that focuses on the

learners, difficulty in analyzing a problem in new numeracy

Specifically, the study aims to answer the following questions

1. What is the level of performance of the Grade III pupils in terms of:

1.1 numeracy skills; and

1.2 comprehension skills

2. What is the level of performance of Grade III pupils after S.TA.R method implementation

in terms of:

1.1 numeracy skills

1.2 comprehension skills

3. Is there any significant difference on the level of performance of Grade III pupils as

compared to after S.T.A.R method implementation?

III. Proposed Innovation, Intervention and Strategy

Libon West Carisac Elementary School aims high on heling the learners who feels bad

during the pandemic. The school exert many efforts to reach out to individuals in need to

ensure that they may take place in some way or another.

Common problems and issue of the school after the pandemic are the low

performance of the pupils in some major areas mostly mathematics. Now that were back

in normal way of teaching which is face to face, the concern arises having the fact that

during pandemic only parents and elders are the acting teachers to them.

With that the S.T.A.R method which means scan the problem, translate the

problem into equation, solve the problem and review the solutions, which is a method

that aims to uplift mathematics competencies of the learners. The researchers of the

present study will prepare S.T.A.R Flashcards to help the pupils of Libon West Carisac

Elementary School improve their numeracy skills. This intervention may support them in

becoming well – informed with regard to problem solving.

The method offers are categories according to the extent of the needed

assistance by every learners such as:

Category Strategies Utilize

1. Numeracy Skills

 Systematic and explicit

instruction

 Peer assisted instruction

 Ongoing, formative

assessment

2. Comprehension Skills

(Problem Solving related activities)

 Improving problem solving

by improving reading skills

To ensure the smooth and continues flow of the entire project step-by-step

process is being consider like the following:

1. The school researcher, conducted a series of problem, discussed what the

pupils need to implied, develop and learned.

2. Presentation of project proposal, S.T.A.R method activities to the school

principle by school coordinators.

3. Determined of identified respondents by all adviser after weeks, answering

activities given. Face to face, communication with them must be very helpful

to overcome the problem.

4. The project will explained properly to the school principal as well as, to the

school coordinators. The researchers had important role they must portray in

the entire project implementation.

5. This project presented and signed them as a proof that they understand the

entire process and it would benefits the children.

6. Conduct a learning center tutorial

7. Regular checking of the improvements of the students.

The researchers headed by the school principal seek a help to the adviser of

grade 3 pupils to find any solution, which will help them to solve the problem.

IV. Action Research Methods

A. Participants and/or other sources of data and information

The participants of this study are the selected participants of Grade 3 pupils of

Libon West Carisac Elementary School who are considered has a low performance in

mathematics subject for the School Year 2022-2023. They are the learners who needs

assistance in order to cope up with the lesson. The study utilized purposive sampling

since the participants of the study are the selected and identified by the researcher

through the data given by the school. The respondents are identify upon the

assessment of the teachers based on their response of the first grading period that is

considered has a low performance in mathematics subject. The participants are subject

to involve in S.T.A.R Method in the prescribe time in order to uplift their level of

performance as aimed in this study.

B. Data Gathering Method

This study be descriptive comparative design. Descriptive design is use to gather

information about numeracy without changing the environment. According to Gray et al,

(2013), the descriptive design maybe used to identify problems in current practice, make

judgement or even develop theories. Science the study compared variables from the

performances from the previous activities and the current performances without

manipulating the independent variable, the researchers adopted the comparative design

within descriptive research.

In gathering the data, the researcher utilizes a pretest and posttest self – made

questionnaires that will be answered by the respondents before and after tutorial activities

catered. After the data has been gathered, tabulation analyses are applied using the determine

data analyzing tool to determine the outcomes of the study.

C. Data Analysis Plan

The performance level of the respondents are low in terms of numeracy skills

identified through computing the use of frequency, percentage distribution and rank. On

the other, hand to compute the significant difference on the level of performance of

grade III pupils as compared before and after the S.T.A.R method implementation as

based on the test result of the self-made test utilized during pre-test and post-test.

Furthermore, its’ commonly used to test if a new process or treatment is superior

to a current process (Snedecor and Cochran, (1989) which is suitable in this study.

This study started in January 2023 and it will ends on May 2023, covering the

third and fourth quarter.
