Concept Note #4
Introduction to the World of Badminton

Badminton is a type of racket sport played by using a racket to hit a shuttlecock across
the net. The most common forms of the game are singles and doubles. The ancient game of
Greece and Egypt was known as Battledore and Shuttlecock originated more than 2000 years
ago. Modern badminton can be traced to mid-19 th century India. It was popular in the British
garrison town of Pune, and the game came to be known as Poona or Poonah. Between 1856-
and 1859 the game was known as Battledore and Shuttlecock until it evolved into a modern
badminton game.

International Badminton Federation (IBF) was founded in 1934 with nine-member

nations: Canada, Denmark, England, France, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Scotland, and
Wales. Later on, IBF was changed to Badminton World Federation (BWF) and has expanded to
176 member nations. The first IBF tournament was the Thomas Cup in 1948 and in addition to
the world events is the Uber Cup.
