Ramu wanted to make a cardboard box to keep his toys.
He took a square piece of card board of side 18cm, which

is to be made into an open box by cutting a square from
each corner and folding the flaps to form the box.

(i) Find the volume of the box formed by folding after

cutting squares from each corner of side x cm (1m)

that the volume of the box is maximum? (2m)
(iii) What is the maximum volume of the box? (1m)

37. Read the following passage and answer the questions :

Radha’s Mathematics teacher explained increasing and
decreasing functions from the topic application of derivatives.
He explained the conditions for which a function will be
increasing or decreasing. He took more examples of different
functions to make the topic more clear to the students. Then
he took the function f( x ) = sinx+cosx , 0 ≤ x ≤ 2 π and asked the students
to answer the following questions.

6
(i) Turning points in the given interval. (1m)
(ii) Intervals in which f( x ) is increasing or decreasing. (2m)
(iii) Maximum value and minimum value of f( x ) in the given
interval. (1m)
38. Mathematics teacher of class XII explained the
methods
of finding :
(i) Area bounded by a curve, x – axis and two ordinates.
(ii) Area bounded by the curve, y – axis and two lines parallel
to x – axis. Next, she asked the students to find the area of
the circle x 2+ y 2 = a2 in both the ways.

7
(i) What is the area of the circle using the method (i). (1½m)

(ii) What is the area of the circle using method (ii). (1½m)

(iii) Are the answers obtained using method (i) and (ii)

same? (1m)
