bars) (M4SP-IVg-3.4)
b. solves routine and non-routine problems using data presented in a single or double-bar graph.
(M4SP-IVg-3.5)

To The Learners:
Before you start the module, I want you to set aside other tasks that will disturb you while enjoying
the lessons. Read the simple instructions below to successfully enjoy the objectives of this kit.
Have fun!

1. Follow carefully all the contents and instructions indicated in every page of this module.
2. Take down the concepts about the lessons. Writing enhances learning, that is important to develop
and keep in mind.

Looking Back to Your Lesson

From your previous lesson, you have learned that data from a certain table (tabular data)
can be presented into a bar graph. These bar graphs can be a vertical or horizontal in form. A
bar graph has its parts with particular information contained.

Introduction of the Topic

Lesson 1: Interpreting Bar Graph

A bar graph is a visual way of showing information in which quantities corresponding to
particular categories are represented by rectangular bars of equal width. The lengths or heights of
the rectangular bars compare the quantities in different categories.

On the left is a Single Vertical Bar Graph representing the number of hours spent in playing
computers per day of five children. The vertical bars compare the number of hours playing computer
for each child per day.
The same data can also be displayed using horizontal bars called Single Horizontal Bar Graph
as shown in the right.

MATH 4 QUARTER 4 WEEK 6 P a g e 3 | 10

In the same graph, the title is clearly shown above the graph and both axes (vertical axis and
horizontal axis) were labelled.

Remember, bar graph shows collected information or data and this data can lead you to discuss
and allow you to draw conclusions.

Let us use the graphs (single vertical/horizontal bar graph) from the previous page to answer
some questions.
1. What is the title of the bar graph? (Number of Hours Playing Computer per Day)
2. In the single vertical bar graph, what information is placed along the horizontal axis?
(Names) on the vertical axis? (Number of Hours)
3. In the horizontal bar graph, what information is placed along the horizontal axis? (Number
of hours) on the vertical axis? (Names)
4. Who spent the most number of hours playing computer? (Mark)
5. How many hours does Andrea spend in playing computer? (5 hours)
6. Who spent the least number of hours playing computer? (Ruben)
7. How many more hours does Nelia spend than Sarah in playing computer? (4 – 3 = 1 hour)
8. What is the total number of hours the five children spent in playing computer in one day?
(5 + 6 + 3 + 1 + 4 = 19 hours)

Use the data in the given graph to answer the following questions.

9. The bar graph above shows the number of hours that five pupils spend in playing computer.
How many more hours does Mark spend in playing computer than Andrea?
a. What is asked? The number of hours Mark spend in playing computer more than
Andrea.)
b. What facts are needed to solve the problem? (Mark = 6 hours, Andrea = 5 hours)
c. What operation will you use? (subtraction)
d. What is the number sentence? (6 – 5 = N)
e. What is the complete answer? (Mark spend 1 hour in playing computer more than
Andrea.)

Double bar graph helps us compare or present more than one kind of information instead of
just one by using bars. Same with single bar graph, a double bar graph can also be vertical or
horizontal. It also have two axes, the vertical axis and the horizontal axis.
A legend is necessary for this kind of graph which represents the data being compared.
A Double Vertical Bar Graph displays vertical bars to represent data. A graph on the left is
an example of a double vertical bar graph representing grade’s four favorite sports.
Double Horizontal Bar Graph on the other hand, shows horizontal bars to represent data.
Same data from the single vertical bar graph can be represented into a double horizontal bar graph
as shown on the right.

Let us use the graphs (double vertical /horizontal bar graph) to answer the following questions.

MATH 4 QUARTER 4 WEEK 6 P a g e 4 | 10

1. What is the title of the bar graph? (Favorite Sports of Grade Four)
2. In the double vertical bar graph, what does the vertical axis represent? (Number of pupils)
Horizontal axis? (Name of Sports)
3. What groups of data are being compared? (Favorite sports of boys and girls in Grade 4)
4. How many boys like basketball? (12)
5. How many more boys than girls like volleyball? (10 – 2 = 8)
6. What is the most favorite sport of girls? (bowling)
7. How many more girls like bowling than badminton? (10 – 8 = 2)
8. How many pupils like volleyball? (12)
9. What is the most favorite sport of boys? (basketball)
10. Why do you think basketball is the most favorite sport of boys? (answers may vary)
Use the graphs to answer the following questions.
11. The two bar graphs show the favorite sports of Grade 4. How many grade four pupils like
bowling more than badminton?
a. What is asked? (The number of grade four pupils like bowling more than badminton)
b. What are the given facts? (bowling: boys = 8 badminton: boys = 4
girls = 10 girls = 8)
c. What operation will you use? (addition and subtraction)
d. What is the number sentence? (8 + 10) – (4 + 8) = N
e. What is the complete answer? (There are 6 grade four pupils who like bowling more than
badminton)

Remember

You have learned from this lesson two types of bar graphs: the single bar graph which
shows single bars to represent data; and double bar graph which presents more than one kind of
information using bars. A single bar graph can be horizontal or vertical as well as the double bar
graph.
A horizontal bar graph includes: two axes, the horizontal and vertical axis with labels, title and scale.
The vertical axis is the group data, while the horizontal axis is the frequency data.
A vertical bar graph also has two axes, the horizontal axis and the vertical axis with labels, the title
and the scale. The horizontal axis is the group data while the vertical axis is the frequency data.
To interpret bar graphs:
✓ look into its parts
✓ find the vertical axis and the horizontal axis
✓ look into the labels and the scales
✓ look for the legend
