ELECTRICAL
SAFETY

ELECTRICAL SAFETY
 Never use electrical tools on damp ground or
around water
 Do not overload electrical outlets with too many
electrical plugs.
 Wear rubber gloves and rubber boots when working
near electrical components.

8
11/04/2023

ELECTRICAL SAFETY
 If you have a bad feeling about some work
concerning electricity, stay away!
 Know where breakers and electrical boxes are in
case of an emergency

ELECTRICAL SAFETY
 Do not touch a person or electrical apparatus in the
event of an electrical accident. Always disconnect
the current first.
 Do not clean tools with flammable or toxic solvents.

REVIEW
YOUR 5S

SORTING (SEIRI)
 Eliminate all unnecessary tools, parts, and instructions.
 Go through all tools, materials, and so forth in the plant and work area.
 Keep only essential items and eliminate what is not required,
prioritizing things as per requirements and keeping them in
approachable places.
 Everything else is stored or discarded.

10
11/04/2023

SETTING IN ORDER (SEITON)

 There should be a place for everything and
everything should be in its place
 The place for each item should be clearly labeled or
demarcated.

SETTING IN ORDER (SEITON)

 Items should be arranged in a manner that
promotes efficient work flow.
 Each tool, part, supply, or piece of equipment
should be kept close to where it will be used – in
other words, straightening the flow path.

11
11/04/2023

SHINING (SEISO)
 Keep the workplace tidy and organized.
 At the end of each shift, clean the work area and be
sure everything is restored to its place.
 A key point is that maintaining cleanliness should be
part of the daily work – not an occasional activity
initiated when things get too messy.

STANDARDIZING
(SEIKETSU)
 Work practices should be consistent and
standardized.
 Everyone should know exactly what his or her
responsibilities are for adhering to the first 3 S's.

12
11/04/2023

SUSTAINING (SHITSUKE)

 Maintain and review standards.

 Once the previous 4 S's have been established, they
become the new way to operate. Maintain focus on
this new way and do not allow a gradual decline
back to the old ways.

SUSTAINING (SEIKETSU)

 While thinking about the new way, also be thinking

about yet better ways.
 When an issue arises such as a suggested
improvement, a new way of working, a new tool or a
new output requirement, review the first 4 S's and
make changes as appropriate

HANDTOOL

 A hand tool is a device for performing work on a

material or a physical system using only hands.
 The hand tools can be manually used employing
force, or electrically powered, using electrical
current.

14
11/04/2023

CATEGORIES OF HANDTOOLS
 DRIVING TOOLS
 SOLDERING TOOLS
 SPLICING TOOLS
 CUTTING TOOLS
 AUXILIARY TOOLS
 TESTING TOOLS

DRIVING TOOLS

 are hand tools designed to insert and

tighten, or to loosen and remove bolts or
screws.

15
11/04/2023

SCREWDRIVERS
 are hand tools specifically designed to insert and
tighten, or to loosen and remove screws.
 Comprises of a head or tip, which engages with a
screw, a mechanism to apply force by rotating the
tip, and someway to position and support the
screwdriver, the tip of which is shaped in to fit a
particular type of screw.

SCRREWDRIVER PARTS

16
11/04/2023

SLOTTED/FLAT-HEAD
SCREWDRIVER
 used to drive or fasten negative slotted screws.

PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER

 A person named Henry Philips, in the 19th century

invented the Philips screwdriver.
 used to drive or fasten positive slotted screws.
 It is a screwdriver that could take greater torque
and could provide tighter fastenings.

17
11/04/2023

PRECISION SET
SCREWDRIVER
 a set of small screw drivers composed of slotted
and Phillips screwdrivers.

ALLEN WRENCH /HEX

 A hex key (also, hex wrench, Allen key and Allen

wrench) is a simple driver for bolts or screws that
have heads with internal hexagonal recesses
(sockets).

18
11/04/2023

ALLEN WRENCH /HEX

Hex keys are formed from a single
piece of hard hexagonal steel rod,
having blunt ends that fit snugly into
similarly-shaped screw sockets.
The rods are bent to 90º, forming
two arms of unequal length
resembling an "L".

19
11/04/2023

TORX SCREWDRIVER
 Torx screwdriver has a star shape tip with 6
rounded lobes. Torx was initially used for security
purpose but now it is found in many other
applications also.
 Because of the circular geometry of the lobes there
is low radial force required in a torx screwdriver,
which increases the life of the screw and the
screwdriver bit.

POZIDRIV
 Pozidriv also is known as “Pozidrive”. Unlike Phillips
screwdriver, the pozidriv screwdriver has two cross
sign which are offset at 45 degree angles from the
main blades.

20
11/04/2023

ROBERTSON OR SQUARE
SCREWDRIVER
 This type of screwdrivers constitutes the highest torque
than all drive types.
 Square head screws are mostly found in the automotive
and furniture industries because of their durability. Slight
Taper shape at the front of the tool provides a good
locking with the screw and thus makes it more
comfortable for use and also neglects the cam out effect.

CLUTCH HEAD OR BOW TIE

SCREWDRIVER
 Clutch head also have a security version that is slotted
one way and it is very difficult to remove it. These are
found mostly in places where maintenance is not frequent,
such as bus stations or prisons.
 Clutch head screwdriver types mostly used in the
automotive industry and are very popular with older GM
vehicles.

SOLDERING IRON TIPS

CONICAL

- As the name suggests, this

kind of tip features a conical
taper with a rounded end.
Conical tips deliver heat to a
small defined area.

27
11/04/2023

BEVELED

- A beveled soldering iron tip is similar

to a conical iron tip, but two ends are
flattened to resemble a chisel. This
kind of tip is easier to wet since the
two flat sides can hold more solder
compared to a conical tip.

CHISEL

- Chisel tips are like beveled

tips but with only one side
flattened. This makes them
a reasonable substitute for
beveled tips.

28
11/04/2023

KNIFE TIP

- This kind of tip is mainly used for

applications like drag soldering, where
the tip is pre-tinned and dragged
across a large row of small SMD pads
to solder them at once.

BENT TIP

-This type of tip finds use in niche

applications for hard-to-reach
joints.

29
11/04/2023

SOLDERING TOOL STAND

 A place for soldering iron to

keep them away from
flammable materials. It often
comes with a sponge and flux
pot for cleaning the tip

30
11/04/2023

DESOLDERING TOOL

- Used for removal of solder

and components from a
circuit when troubleshooting,
repair purposes and to save
some components

DOS AND DON’TS IN USING HAND TOOLS

51
11/04/2023

PLIERS

- Do not increase the handle length of pliers to

gain more leverage. Use a larger pair of pliers
or bolt cutters if necessary.

PLIERS

- Do not substitute pliers for a wrench when

turning bolts and nuts. Pliers cannot grip
these items properly and might cause a slip
and create an accident.

52
11/04/2023

PLIERS

- Never use pliers as a hammer on the

handle. Such abuse is likely to result in
cracks or breaks.

PLIERS

- Cut hardened wires only with pliers

designed for that purpose.

53
11/04/2023

PLIERS

- Always cut the wires in right angle. Never

rock from side to side or bend wire back and
forth against the cutting edges.

SCREW DRIVERS

Never use screwdrivers as a pry bar, chisel, and punch stirrer

or scraper.

54
11/04/2023

SCREW DRIVERS

Never use screwdrivers with broken or worn-out handles. Screwdrivers of

these kinds should have tags to indicate that it is defective.

SCREW DRIVERS

Never use pliers on a screwdriver for extra leverage. Only use

wrench or screwdrivers specifically designed for purpose.

55
11/04/2023

UTILITY KNIFE /
BLADE
- Do not use dull blades because
they require more force, thus are
more likely to slip.
- Replace the blade when it starts to
“tear” instead of cut.

UTILITY KNIFE /
BLADE
- Never leave a knife unattended
with the blade exposed.

56
11/04/2023

UTILITY KNIFE /
BLADE
- Don’t bend or apply side loads to
blades by using them to open cans
or loosen tight cover of containers.
Blades are brittle and can snap
easily.

SOLDERING IRON

Never touch the element of the

soldering iron....400°C!

57
11/04/2023

SOLDERING IRON

Hold wires to be heated with

tweezers or clamps.

SOLDERING IRON

Keep the cleaning sponge wet

during use.

58
11/04/2023

SOLDERING IRON

Do not use soldering irons that have

obvious damage to body, cable or plug.

SOLDERING IRON

Always return the soldering iron to its

stand when not in use. Never put it down
on the workbench.

59
11/04/2023

LEAD
EXPOSURE
- Lead can give rise to serious chronic health
effects.
- Exposure will primarily be through
accidental ingestion from your skin, wear
gloves if directly handling solder.
- Limited fumes may be generated by
soldering.
