FOREIGN DANCE

"ROBAM NESAT"
CAMBODIAN FISHING DANCE
HISTORY

It was performed from 1967 until 1975 and has been

revived since 1979. Young men and women descend to the
river on opposite sides at the start of the dance. Their
elation is shown in the dance, as is the excitement and
happiness they feel upon meeting. They flirt with each
other while fishing.
PURPOSE OF DANCE

The lads jokingly take the girl's fishing baskets and have
a good time. One young couple would have been left
behind as the group split up during the dance, and they
fell in love. Like many other types of Khmer Folk dance,
Robam Nesat is also done at religious events,
celebrations, and leisurely entertainment. The group
returns to them after the dance to taunt and applaud
them.

BASIC STEPS

matching hand movements with the basket. Fishing
movements is present like kneeling and bending the
kness to catch.

The Costume is dependible on the event in formal or informal
