Instructional Plan (Physics Pre-IX)

Day/Date: 1 and 2
Topic: Measurement
SLOs No: 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3
Facilitator/Teacher: ________________________________________________
Time Allocation: 80 Minutes
Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
● Discuss the brief history of physics.
● Explain the notion of Standards and units with the help of history and system of
measurements.
● Name the SI units and reasons which make it acceptable internationally as a
consequence.

Materials: multimedia, USB, laptop, speakers, stop watch, measuring tape, ruler, physical
balance, 1 kg weight box, handouts, whiteboard and marker.

Stages Activities Time

Activity I (Prior Knowledge Test) – At the beginning of the lesson the teacher will
ask the following questions.
● Suppose you go to a shop to buy sugar for your kitchen use. What will you say
to the shop keeper? (Expected answer: Give a 1 kg of sugar). What the shop
keeper do before collecting money from you?
● What is the duration of physics class? (Answer: 40 Minutes). How does you
know measure the time?
● What is your height? (5 feet 3 inches). How do we measure length?
In the end of the activity, the teacher will discuss the above questions, define;
measurement and physical quantities. In addition the teacher will highlight the
importance of measuring instrument in science and particularly in physics.
Initiation

Activity II (Introduction) – The teacher will introduce the lesson and note down the 8-Mins
following SLO’s on the whiteboard:
● Discuss the brief history of physics.
● Explain the notion of Standards and units with the help of history and system of
measurements.
● Name the SI units and reasons which make it acceptable internationally as a
consequence.

Activity III (Investigation) – The teacher will play a video relate to the topic History of
Physics. The students will watch the video carefully. They can request the teacher to
pause the video and can ask questions. The teacher will facilitate the students.

OR
Alternate to Activity III- In case of no electricity or Technology failure, the teacher will
present this topic in detail through the lecture method.
Activity IV (Investigation) – The teacher will ask three students (student A, student B,
and student C) to come in front of the class. S/he will put two points on the
whiteboard. S/he will ask student A, student B, and student C to measure the length
one by one with the help of their extended hands and note down their answer in front
of their name on the whiteboard. (i.e. 3, 5, or 6 hands). Now, the s/he will provide
meter rods to the students and ask them to measure the distance using the meter
rods. They will measure and write the answers with their previous measured values
(i.e. 100 cm, 100 cm, 100cm).
Prompting Questions
1. Despite using a similar method, the students got different answers when they
used their hands. Why.
2. What did the students change to obtain the same result?
3. Which one of the measuring instruments, hands or meter rule is reliable? And
Why?
The students will go back to their seats, and the teacher will summarize the above
activity and discuss the meaning of standard and its importance in science.
Example:
The word "standard" has several different definitions. Even within science, there are
multiple meanings. In metrology and other sciences, such as chemistry and physics, a
standard is a reference that is used to calibrate measurements. Historically, each
authority defined its own standards for systems of weights and measures. This resulted
in confusion. Although some of the older systems are still in use, modern standards are
internationally recognized and defined under controlled conditions. Examples of
standards include the international prototype kilogram (IPK), which is the mass
standard for the International System of Units (SI), and the volt, which is the unit of
electrical potential.
Activity V (Presentation) – The teacher will present the following topic in the class.
S/he will note down the important points on the whiteboard as well s/he will provide

Activity VI (Question-Answers) – The students will answers (Orally) the following
questions:
i. Define Physics.
ii. When did Newton’s present the famous laws of motion?
iii. Name any one Muslim Scientist from history.
Concluding
