Catharanthus roseus (Periwinkle, Nayantara)

is a main source of vinca alkaloids, now sometimes called catharanthus alkaloids.

The plant produces about 130 of these compounds, including the anti-cancer
agents,vinblastine and vincristine (Vinca Alkaloids).

The first most successful phytoconstituents used in cancer chemotherapy are the
alkaloids of Catharanthus roseus (Apocynaceae) commonly known as "Periwinkle".
Two of these alkaloids Vinblastine and Vincristine present in minor
quantities(0.0002%) are now commerically extracted
from C.roseus
