Mechanics and Guidelines for Badminton

Singles and Doubles
Mechanics for Badminton Singles

Before the game starts, a toss shall be done. It’s either the shuttle will be tossed and the point
where the cork of the shuttle is pointing gets to play or a coin is tossed.

In serving, the first to serve shall stand on the right side of the court and the one to receive it is
on its opposing side. All even numbers shall be served on the right side of the court and all odd
numbers shall be served on the left side of the court and serving should be served diagonally.
In receiving, the player to receive the shuttle shall be on the opposing side of the server.

The winner of the said toss will be able to choose if they will serve first or receive or if they will
play on what side of the court. The remaining choice will be exercised by the losing side.

The game shall consist of three sets where an individual should get 21 points first to win a set. If
both get equal scores, the first to reach the two points shall be the winner. If however, they get
tied up until 29, the first to score 30 shall be the winner of the set.

A player who wins two sets consecutively shall be the winner and a need for a third set is not
necessary. But if both sides win a game once, that is when a third set is necessary.

At 11 points in each set, both players will take a 60-second break where coaches may come in
or a friend before going back to the game. After a set, players will have a 2 minute break before
switching courts.

If a third game is necessary, at 11 points, regardless of who scored first, players will have a
60-second break again but this time, they will exchange courts afterwards.

When serving, players must stay on their designated courts and serve there, but can move
anywhere inside their court when the rally starts.

The player is not allowed to hit the shuttle twice or else the point will be given to the opposing
player.

When the cork of the shuttle will hit the line but goes out, that is still considered in. But if it hits
out, but goes in, that is already out. However, when a shuttlecock is served or received going
out, but the player was able to hit it back, the rally must continue.

Failure to hit the shuttle back to your opponent or violates a rule, your opponent gains a score.
If the server scores, he or she gets to serve again on the proper side of his/her court. If a
receiver scores, he/she gets to serve on the designated side of the court depending on their
scores.

Another thing is in serving, the server must serve the shuttlecock onto the designated box of the
receiver to gain a point. Serving it to the right person and right side is important in serving, but
after the serving-receiving part, any player can now hit and play.

Players of the game are anyone allowed and skilled to play the game except for the following
players: Varsity players of badminton, dropout varsities of the second semester, and trainees of
badminton cannot participate in the game.
