DAD

1 INT. FRANCESCA'S APARTMENT - MORNING 1

DAD nervously hovers while Lucy (13) ties her shoelaces.

DAD START
Sunscreen?

LUCY
Check.

DAD
HOME SWEET ROME

Emergency rain poncho?

LUCY
It's not gonna rain. There isn't a single
cloud between here and Tuscany-

DAD
Emergency rain poncho?

Lucy rolls her eyes, reaching for the door handle.

LUCY
I'm already late, I've gotta go-

DAD
We're not done. What if there's a fire?
A maniac on the bus? A pack of wild boars
chasing you into a boutique where a very
persuasive salesperson who's paid on
commission thinks you'd love a designer
backpack that costs more than grad school?

LUCY
Stop, drop, and roll; exit the bus; climb
a tree; and never buy anything that isn't
on clearance. Unless-

DAD
Unless it's Patagonia, a cargo vest so
dependable you could set your watch to
it. Speaking of, I assume you have a
fully charged solar powered timepiece?

LUCY
I have a clock on my phone?

DAD
You know we can't trust technology without
an analog back up. Guess you'll have to
reschedule since you aren't fully
prepared.

DAD 2.

LUCY
Fully prepared to get gelato...?
(off Dad's worry)
Is it possible this is about something
other than gelato?

He sighs, taking in his daughter, his whole world.

DAD
I'm going a little overboard again, huh?
HOME SWEET ROME

Lucy nods. He feels bad, trying to find the words.

DAD (CONT'D)
I'm sorry Luce, I know you can handle
this, it's just that after your Mom, the
thought that I could lose you too...

LUCY
I get it. But I'm basically just going
across the street. I'm prepared.
Overprepared. And you know why? Because
of everything you've taught me.

Dad beams, trying not to cry.

LUCY (CONT'D)
Sooo, I'm gonna go...

Dad gives her thumbs up. Lucy edges towards to the door.

LUCY (CONT'D)
I'm going...

DAD
Get outta here, already.

LUCY
You sure you're okay?

DAD
Have some dulce de leche for me.

He smiles as she leaves before he changes his mind. Dad takes

a deep breath, willing himself to be okay.

After a beat, he realizes something, pulls his phone and

makes a call. Someone answers, then:

DAD (CONT'D)
Be careful on the sidewalk in front of
the flower shop. It's very uneven! END
OFF Dad, unable to stop his worry...
