Term Definition
Protists Are eukaryotes with unicellular, colonial, filamentous or
parenchymatous organization, which lack vegetative tissue
differentiation except for reproduction.
Protozoa Protozoa is a subkingdom of the Protista and they are referred to as
chemoorganotrophic protists.
Algae Photosynthetic protists that possess a cell wall, eg: plant cells.
Protistology/Protozoology The study of all protists, regardless of their metabolic type.
Saprophytes Chemoorganoheterotrophic protists that secure nutrients from
dead organic material by releasing degradative enzymes into the
environment
Osmotrophy A feeding mechanism involving the movement of dissolved organic
compounds by osmosis for nutrition.
Mixotrophy A mechanism of cultivation, where heterotrophic and autotrophic
modes work simultaneously, leading to utilization of inorganic and
organic carbon in the presence of light.
Phagocytosis The process by which a phagocyte (a type of white blood cell)
surrounds and destroys foreign substances (such as bacteria) and
removes dead cells.
Cytostome A specialized structure for phagocytosis in a microorganism, also
known as a cell mouth.
Cytoproct A designated position where undigested contents of the original
phagocytic vacuole are expelled from the cell, also known as an
anus.
Hydrogenosomes Organelles that are speculated to have evolved from mitochondria
to provide a different mechanism for anaerobic ATP synthesis
utilizing pyruvate
Gamonts Protist cells that produce gametes
Syngamy The fusion of haploid gametes
Conjugation The temporary union of two bacteria or unicellular organisms for
the exchange of genetic material.
Mycologists A person who studies fungi
Mycology The scientific discipline devoted to fungi
Mycotoxicology The study of fungal toxins
Mycoses The diseases caused by fungi in animals
