COMPARISON OF THE STUDY HABİTS BETWEEN TURKİSH AND FİLİPİNO

STUDENTS İN SPEAKING ENGLİSH

Background of Study

English as a language has completely evolved. It is the universal language of the world. One has

to have at least a basic idea on how to use it in writing or in communicating. To some, it takes

time for them to learn considering so many factors and even have a hard time understanding and

learning it. However, with the innovations now in the world, nothing is impossible if one is

greatly determined to do what one wants. Different people have different ways on how they learn

the English language. The focus of this paper is on comparing how Filipino and Turkish students

learn the English language. The sooner person starts practicing and developing good habits, the

better chance he or she will have ın developing the language. Good study habits are essential to

educational success. However, motivation is basically the main problem. For many years, the

issue of motivation has drawn a lot of attention since, as Dörnyei (2001a) puts forth, motivation

has a vital role in determining whether the students will succeed or fail in any lessons or areas.

This study will help and indicate importance of motivation for Turkish and Filipino students

during speaking English language.

Good study habits are an important part of any student’s success. According to Crow & Crow

(1992) the effective habits of study include planning, a definite time table and taking brief of

well-organized notes. To study successfully a student must decide what information is important

and then from opinions concerning it. All these things must be done to the best of his ability in

the shortest possible span of time. People can diminish the academic dishonesty by promoting

good study habits with students, and letting the students know that good study habits are very

important when it comes to school. Still, even procrastination can be overcome with proper study

habits, and improving study habits is the key to improve the learning process. Good study habits

are a great tool to have in the toolbox of life. His or her excellent academic performance is an

ultimate goal of study for every student because it provides the half way of success in the future.

Students need to know how they can earn the achievement in academic performance. Moreover,
one of the aims of the study is to find out of Turkish and Filipino student’s speaking strategies

for English language and how speaking skill affects their academic performance. One scholar

believed that, “the truth is that success in school is not so much determined by sheer intelligence

as knowing how to study”(Mayland Community College, 2002, p. 2) and when students perform

what they should do in study period, it means that they have good study habits. Also, Mayland

Community College (2002) identified that good study habits include many skills such as time

management, self-discipline, concentration, memorization and effort.

This study aimed to reveal the attitudinal dispositions of Filipino and Turkish students towards

English language and speaking tactics as well as English speaking societies concentrating on

their study habits of learning English language, and thus suggest ways of influencing learners’

attitudes in order to create a positive learning environment.

Statement of the Problem

This paper aims to compare study habits of learning how to speak English between Turkish

and Filipino students. The study habits as well as the motivation of two varied groups of English

language learners, namely: Filipinos and Turkish. Turkish and Filipino students use various

strategies and motivations in learning how to speak the English language. The study also focuses

to analyze the comprehension and comparison of the study habits in learning how to speak

English between Turkish and Filipino students and to determine which method is the best way to

learn good speaking skills in English for Turkish and Filipino students.

Research Questions

1. What are the similarities and differences between the study habits of Filipinos and Turks in

speaking English?

2. What are the dominant difficulties encountered common to both groups when speaking

English?

2a. which study habits common to both groups that made them learn how to speak English

effectively?
3. How do both groups of learners improve their speaking English effectively?

Scope and Limitations

Limitations include that the sample was taken only from Zamboanga City. The study also

does cover foreign students belonging to other nationalities as it focuses on Turk students and

Filipino students. Since, there are two (2) female Turkish students studying in Zamboanga, the

sample is to male and female students. The sample is relatively small as it will only include

twenty four (24) respondents so the possibility of detecting change over time is limited. The

study is not therefore limited in terms of making generalizations.

Theoretical Frame Work

The theory of confluent education is a vital consideration in determining strategies to

improve student’s study habits and study attitude toward speaking English. Confluent education

as described by Hackbarth [7] is the type of learning intended to produce a sense of wholeness in

people and society. Literature suggests that, as cited in the study of Hurlburt, et.al. [8], confluent

education holds promise as an educational philosophy that can address issues of identity, self-

worth, interpersonal relationships, and societal pressures. The said authors describes this as

systemic in orientation, meaning, students should not be regarded as objects to be molded into

predetermined forms; rather students and teachers should work together to achieve a mutually

empowering learning and speaking experience. This implies that students should be educated as

a whole person in all aspects which includes his intrapersonal and societal development.

This means that effective studying requires not only that the students possess knowledge

of appropriate studying techniques and speaking skills, but also sustained and deliberate effort

(study motivation), self-regulation, ability to concentrate, self-monitoring (study habits), and

sense of responsibility for and value in one’s own learning with this premise, this paper

considered the implications of the study habits and study attitudes of the students to confluent

education to provide a valuable note in designing a framework for academic intervention

programs.

This study was delimited to the preparation, implementation, and evaluation of a

prototype Turkish and Filipino’ study habits production-based module aimed at improving

students’ speaking skills in English. However the study involved university students, twenty

four, in the level enrolled in major English during the semester of the academic year 2014-2015

at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University and Western Mindanao State University. The

respondents were picked by the researcher during the first and second semester because it was

composed of students majoring in different universities, therefore were not classmates in all their

subjects and would make extra effort to know each other.

Significance of the Study

Significance of this topic opens one’s mind to two different backgrounds and societies – Turkish

and Filipino learners of English language. It also allows one to understand the differences

between the two people in accordance to study habits or schooling. Also, choosing this topic will

allow one to consider factors that may affect a person’s study habit. This paper will benefit three

groups such as future researchers, teachers, and English learners.

This paper will benefit future researchers. The benefit that researchers will get from this topic is

that, it will enhance abilities in terms of reading, critical thinking skills and English as a whole.

Digging deeper in this topic would require a lot of readings for researcher to get, and find ideas

related to what topic is. Also, as he goes further, critical thinking is being applied since

researcher has to assess what factors or ideas from his readings to consider. Thus, English as a

whole will be developed or enhanced since he or she will be able to meet new words in English

and apply it. To the English learners, it will benefit them by giving them a clear picture and

understanding on how Turkish people are doing with regard to their studies. Not only that, but

they will see the comparison and differences of the Filipino students with the Turkish students in

terms of study habits, motivations and what not. To students, the study will be beneficial enough

in a manner that it will widen their certain area of knowledge regarding to issues related to it.

Accordingly to teachers, the study will be a tool for them to be able to identify and evaluate the

differences in English speaking skills between Turkish and Filipino students.

Finally, the result of this study will give way to providing interventions so that study habits of

the students can be developed or enhanced, and it will help the learners to know similarities and

differences between Turkish and Filipino students’ study habits regarding on speaking English
