Chapter One
Introduction
1.1 Building description

The building consisted of 7 floors, Basement, Ground, 1st, 2nd,3rd ,4th and
bent house.

The typical floor area is (328m2) with height (4.2m). The building will
construct from concrete material (Columns, walls and slabs with beams).
The type of foundation is raft for the basement.

The details of structural systems are as follows:

1- The main panels dimension are 6m by 6m.

2- The concrete raft depth is 900 mm and reinforced by tow layer mesh
of Ø25@125mm Top and bottom layers.
3- The concrete Columns is 700mm × 400mm dimensions and the
reinforcement depend on the results of analysis and design by
ETABS Model.
4- The concrete slabs is 180mm and reinforced by 2 layers of mesh
Ø12@150mm Top and bottom layers.
5- The main beams are 400mm x 600mm concrete section and the
reinforcement depend on the results of analysis and design by
ETABS Model.
The figure below show the ground plan of building.

Design Criteria

2.1 Design Criteria

2.1.1 Design Codes and Standards

The following codes and standards have been adopted in the analysis and
design of the building:

1. IRAQ SEISMIC CODE 303 (2017).

2. ACI Committee 315, Details and Detailing of Concrete Reinforcement,
ACI 315-99 (ACI 315 1999).
3. ACI Committee 318, Building Code Requirements for Structural
Concrete (ACI 318-19) and Commentary (ACI 318 2019).
4. Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and other
Structures (ASCE 2016).
2.1.2 Units

SI units will be used throughout the design calculations.

2.1.3 Loads

2.1.3.1 Gravity Loads

Gravity loads, including self-weight, superimposed dead, and live loads are
estimated according ASCE7-16 (ASCE 2016).

2.1.3.2 Total dead load: Flooring & Ceiling

Screed Density = 20 kN/m3, Tiles Density = 20 kN/m3 ,

Flooring Load = Screed + Tiles = 0.1 m × 20 kN/m3 =2.0 kN/m2
Mechanical Load = 0.5 kN/m2
Total Super Dead Load (SDL) = 2.5 kN/m2 for Typical floor.
Total Super Dead Load (SDL) = 2.5 kN/m2 for Roof floor.
2.1.3.3 Exterior and Interior Brick Wall Load

The external and internal brick wall load has used (15 kN/m.l) for walls.

2.1.3.4. Live Load

The following live loads are used:

For typical floor (offices + halls + corridor) = 4 kN/m2
Roof live load= 1.5 kN/m2
2.1.3.5 Seismic Load

Seismic Design Categories (SDCs) are adopted from ASCE (2016) and
IRAQ seismic code 2017. Based on codes and standards, seismic
parameters for Baghdad that are adopted in the ETABS model have been
summarized in Table 1.

3.6 Conclusion:
According to the structural analysis and design by the ETABS and SAFE
(structural software), the maximum story drifts within the specification
limit, the maximum deflection in slabs is less that the maximum limit, all
structural members (Raft, Columns, Beams, and Slabs) design due to
analysis result and with the specifications limit. Therefore the building is
safe and can carry the dead, live load above the floors and slabs and
earthquake, and wind loads applied to the building.
