THERMOS/VACUUM FLASK

❖ Vacuum(thermos) flask - this is designed to keep liquids hot or cold by

minimising heat exchange between the content and the external environment
➢ To prevent heat loss from the
flask by
1. conduction
❖ A vacuum is created between the double
glass wall and the stopper is made of a
poor conductor
❖ The cover, case and shock pads are
made of good insulating material to
prevent transfer of thermal energy by
conduction

2. Convection and Evaporation

❖ The stopper is air tight and seldom
removed

3. Radiation
❖ The walls of glass are silvered so as to
reflect the radiant heat back into the hot
liquid.
❖ The outer wall of the case is polished
because of this the shiny surface of the
wall thus allows for little to no emission
of thermal radiation minimising any
change in temperature of its contents.
