Definitions:

Malware- software that is specifically designed to disrupt, damage, or gain


unauthorized access to a computer system

Viruses- a type of malicious code or program written to alter the way a


computer operates and is designed to spread from one computer to another

Worms- a standalone malware computer program that replicates itself in order


to spread to other computers

Trojans- also known as a Trojan horse is a type of malware that is often


disguised as legitimate software and can be employed by cyber-thieves and
hackers

Spyware- software that enables a user to obtain covert information about


another’s computer activities by transferring data from their hard drive

Ransomware- a type of software designed to block access to a computer


system until a sum of money is paid

Adware- software that automatically displays or downloads advertising


material such as banners or pop ups when a user is online

Credit card fraud- fraud committed using a payment card, such as a credit card
or debit card to obtain money or services or to make a payment to another
account
Identity theft- the act of a person obtaining information illegally about
someone else

Cyberterrorism- the politically motivated use of computers and information


technology to cause severe disruption or widespread fear in society
