1 GENERAL

1.1 Background

The BSC IP network interface functionality was previously only implemented

in BSC LAN Switch (Extreme Network Summti48si). The NWI-E is the
successor to the BSC LAN Switch and replaces it function wise.

1.2 Scope

The document describes new NWI-E board but only to a certain degree. The
board design itself is owned by Extreme Networks.

1.3 Statement of Compliance

The board has passed through several compliance tests. Please see
references [ 1 ] through [ 7 ] for more details.

1.4 Purpose

The document describes the NWI-E structure and its functionality on a high
level.

2 INTRODUCTION
The NWI-E implements the BSC IP network interface function for the BSC
(L2/L3 switching).

The PBA is designed to be hosted in both GEM and E-GEM magazine. The
only interface connected to the backplane is the power connection.

2.1 Compatibility with E-GEM magazine

NWI-E is compliant with GEM and E-GEM magazine.

4 FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
The following main functional blocks are present in NWI-E:
 Switch subsystem
 Front-End Interface
 Management CPU

4.1 Switch Subsystem

NWI-E uses one Broadcom XGS BCM56500 24-port Gigabit Ethernet switch
controller. It supports the functions, features and performance levels specified
by Broadcom by this chipset.

4.2 Front-End Interface

NWI-E has 13 DensiShield connectors on its front panel. Eleven of them are
used as single 10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet ports. One is used as out-of-
band Ethernet port and the other one is used as serial console port.

Two SFP cages are used to support two 1000Base-X interfaces.

4.3 Management CPU

The BCM1122 CPU controls the local switch fabric and handles packets that
require CPU involvement. It has many interfaces that attach to local devices.
The most important control paths are:
 The PCI bus which connects to the switch fabric BCM56500 chip
 The Ethernet GMII/MII interface which connects to the BCM5241
single PHY
 The I2C bus which connects to several local devices

See Figure 3-1 for top level block diagram.

5 INTERFACE DESCRIPTION

5.1 Internal Interfaces

The internal interfaces are not described as the design and usage of these
outside the scope of this document.

5.2 EXTERNAL INTERFACES

5.2.1 Ethernet 10/100Base-T Management Interface

The Ethernet management interface connects to the CPU subsystem for

management and debugging.

5.2.2 Ethernet 10/100/1000Base-T Switching Interfaces

Eleven Ethernet standard interface connections are provided via front panel
for traffic switching. All interfaces are independent and fully compliant with
IEEE 802.3 and 802.3u.

The same Ethernet Transceiver is used for all Ethernet connections.

5.2.3 Ethernet 1000Base-X Interfaces

Two 1000Base-X interfaces can be used in the two SFP slots.

5.2.4 RS232 interface

The serial console port of the NWI-E uses DensiShield connector with cable
TSR 491 616. The default settings are:
 Baud rate: 9600
 Data bits: 8
 Stop bit: 1
 Parity: None
 Flow control: XON/XOFF
