Characteristics of the unit

Characteristics of the unit

The OF7 serves as a mobile filtration unit and is especially suitable to fill
hydraulic units, to flush small hydraulic units e.g. when commissioning, for
offline filtration of mineral oil in hydraulic units and for recirculation with or
without simultaneous filtration.

OF7K Additional Feature

The OF7K version is a modified standard version to suck up leaking oil with
integrated protection from dry-running.
The OF7K version has the following additional features or restrictions:
- Up to 60 hours of dry-running protection for the vane pump.
Dry-running protection is enabled by the return line (thin plastic tube)
leading from the filter back to the pump. For this, before starting up the
unit, the filter cartridge has to be at least half-filled with the fluid to be
pumped.
- The maximum operating pressure is 3.5 bar.
- Suction screen and reducer from G ¾“ to G ½“.
A 100 µm strainer is screwed into the reducer to protect the pump from
coarse contaminants. Due to the reduction in cross-section, the nominal
flow rate is also reduced.
- The relay in the terminal box has floating contacts to signal "voltage
present" and "pump switched on".
The contact is normally closed.
- A signal cable 10 m or 15 m 2x0.5 mm² with 5-pin coupling (pins).

Connector: AMP T 3360 001

Working principle of the unit

Working principle of the unit

The filtration unit has a motor-pump assembly (20) where the vane pump is
directly flanged onto the drive motor.
Depending on the version, the drive motor is DC/AC or pneumatically
powered.
You will find the the specifications for the supply voltage / pressure on the
name plate for the motor-pump assembly (20) or via the model code for the
filter unit on page 62.
It is only for the 110 / 230 V version that you will find an on/off switch (22) on
the electric motor's terminal box with a motor protection relay to protect it
from overload and a power cable with a mains plug (23).
The motor-pump assembly is flanged onto the head part. The head part
contains the following components:
• A pressure relief valve to protect against overloading. It is located
between the suction and pressure side of the pump and has an
opening pressure of ≈ 3.5 bar
• A suction strainer (5) in the suction port. Access via the hose coupling
(27).
• The holder to fix the suction and pressure hose.

BeWa OF7 3430048e en-us 2016-04-28.doc 2016-04-28
Select operating mode

• The threaded pin for the filter cartridge (10)

• A clogging indicator (21) to show the degree of contamination of the
filter cartridge.
On the head part there is a holder for the strap wrench (6). This serves to
undo the filter cartridge and to fix the hoses during transport.
In the two-part frame for the unit (1) a plastic drip tray (25) is glued in. On the
unit's frame (1) there is a name plate (24) to identify it and which shows the
power data for the filtration unit.

Select operating mode

The filtration unit does not have an operating mode selector. You select the
operating mode by changing between a filter cartridge and an empty
cartridge.

Circulation pumping with filtration

For "Circulation pumping without filtration" mode, use the appropriate filter
cartridge with the desired filtration rating.

Circulation pumping without filtration

For "Circulation pumping without filtration" mode, replace the filter cartridge
with the empty cartridge.
You will find a suitable empty cartridge in the "List of spare parts" chapter on
page 55.

Preparing the unit for operation

Preparing the unit for operation

Consult and observe the following section in order to prepare the unit for
operation.

Emptying unit - preventing oil mixing

If you want to use the same oil for operation as in the previous operation, it is
not serious if the oils are mixed.
If you do not know which oil was previously filtered with the unit, change the
filter element and completely empty the unit in order to prevent mixing with
the residual oil in the filtration unit.
If different oils are mixed, the oil properties can change as
follows:
• Higher risk of cavitation
• More seal wear
• Modified anti-wear properties
• Poorer filtration
• Reduced filter element service lives
• Modified friction characteristics
• Modified response to water
• More deposits due to additive reactions
• More system contamination due to dissolved deposits
• Modified water/air uptake and output properties
• Greater tendency to foam

NOTICE

Severe contamination of the fluid / on the bottom of the tank

The unit will be destroyed

► Never prime without a built-in suction screen.

► Do not prime directly at the bottom of the tank.

► Do not prime in the sump.

The greatest contamination is found on the bottom of the tank.

All impurities and other particles are deposited on the bottom of
the tank.
Prevent aeration of the medium by fully immersing the lance in
the medium.
Make sure that the lance is always below the oil level in
operation.

Check the hoses for damage and brittleness. Replace damaged or brittle
hoses immediately in order to prevent leakages during operation.
Put the hoses with the lance, without any tension and or twist, into the
corresponding tank. Secure the hose so that it cannot fall out or float.
Check that no shut-off devices in the lines/hoses are obstructed. Make sure
there is a depressurized outlet.

After switching on the unit, monitor the suction via the transparent suction
hose.
If the unit is not pumping fluid after a maximum of 5 max. 5 min
minutes of operation, switch it off.
Fill the the motor-pump assembly with fluid via the 12
suction hose.
Switch the unit on again. 9 3

Observe the permissible viscosity of the medium being pumped during

operation. You will find the permissible values in the technical data on page .
To protect the pump, the filtration unit has a suction screen which must be
cleaned on a regular basis. For details, see page 47.

A back pressure indicator on the filtration unit shows

the degree of contamination of the filter cartridge.
When operating the filtration unit with a new filter
cartridge and a fluid viscosity of < 100mm²/s, the
pressure gauge shows minimal pressure at most.
The pressure gauge measures the back-pressure
upstream of the filter cartridge and is an indication of
the degree of contamination of the filter cartridge as
increasing contamination leads to increasing flow
resistance of the filter element.
For visual representation, the pressure gauge has a
green area and a red area. If the pointer leaves the
green area, the filter cartridge is contaminated.
Change the filter cartridge immediately.

Unit in operation

Avoid siphoning

NOTICE

Siphoning effect

Tanks overflowing/leaking = oil spill

► Remove the ends of the hoses from the tanks after operation.

If there is a height different (Δh) between the suction-side and pressure-side

tanks, a suction effect can develop in the hose that is lower down, causing
the fluid levels to equalize in accordance with a principle of communicating
vessels (siphoning). This siphoning effect also occurs when fluid is pumped
in a pre-pressurized tank.
When the unit is switched off, the height difference/primary pressure can
cause flow to occur both in the feed direction and against the feed direction
and the fluid can leak uncontrollably.

WARNING
Operating pressure

Danger of bodily injury

► Pull power plug before performing any work.

► The hydraulic system must be depressurized

before performing any work on the hydraulic
system

The unit has a clogging indicator which shows the level of contamination of
the filter cartridge.
The clogging indicator shows the sum total of all pressure
losses occurring. This means that the clogging indicator may
even show some back pressure for a clean, fresh filter cartridge.
For example, for an operating viscosity of 40 … 50 mm²/s the
back pressure for a new filter cartridge may not exceed 1 bar.

Change the filter cartridge when the back pressure is

approx. 2.5 bar, at the beginning of the red field.
Before changing the filter cartridge, depressurize it.
Once depressurization is complete, the pressure
gauge will show 0 bar
Close any isolating fittings in the suction and pressure
lines.

Suction strainer cleaning interval

The filtration unit is equipped with various suction screens depending on its
design.
The suction strainer (5a) has a much larger absorption capacity at a mesh
width of 300 µm than the suction screen (5b) with a mesh width of 100 µm.
This results in very different cleaning intervals for the different versions.

Item Mesh size Maintenance interval

5a -> 300 µm - every 25 operating hours*
- at least monthly*
- at every filter change*
5b -> 100 µm - every 10 operating hours*
- at least weekly*
- at every filter change*
*) For heavily contaminated fluid, the maintenance intervals shorten.
If the effectiveness of the pump falls or if the pump's noise
levels increase, then check / clean the suction strainer.
