The Distance Formula
The Distance Formula
◼ The distance between any two points with
coordinates (x1,y1) and (x2,y2) is given by the
following formula:

d = ( x2 − x1 ) + ( y2 − y1 )
2 2
What is the distance
between the 2 points?
(-2,6)

(5,3)
Group Activity
◼ Determine if triangle
ABC with vertices
A(-3,4), B(5,2) and
C(-1,-5) is an isosceles
triangle. (Hint: An
isosceles triangle must
have at least 2 sides of
equal length.)

◼ Determine if triangle A(-3,4)
ABC with vertices
B(5,2)
A(-3,4), B(5,2) and
C(-1,-5) is an isosceles
triangle. (Hint: An
isosceles triangle must
have at least 2 sides of
equal length.)
C(-1,-5)
AB = (5 − −3) + (2 − 4)
2 2 BC = (−1 − 5) 2 + (−5 − 2) 2

= (8) + ( −2)
2 2 = ( −6) + ( −7)
2 2

= 64+4 = 68 = 36+49 = 85

A(-3,4)
AC = (−1 − −3) + (−5 − 4)
2 2

B(5,2)
= (2) 2 + ( −9) 2
= 4+81 = 85

BC and AC have the same

lengths, so triangle ABC is
Isosceles. C(-1,-5)
Coordinate
Proof
With Mam Jude Mendoza
A coordinate proof is a style of proof that
uses coordinate geometry and algebra. The
first step of a coordinate proof is to position
the given figure in the plane. You can use any
position, but some strategies can make the
steps of the proof simpler.

The Midpoint Formula
◼ The coordinates of the midpoint "The Midpoint Formula"
sung to the tune of "The Itsy Bitsy Spider"
of a line segment whose
endpoints are (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) When finding the midpoint of two
points on a graph,
are given by the following Add the two x's and cut their sum in
formula: half.
Add up the y's and divide 'em by a
two,
Now write 'em as an ordered pair
It’s the middle of the two.

Example 1: Writing a Proof Using Coordinate
Geometry

Write a coordinate proof.

Given: Rectangle ABCD
with A(0, 0), B(4, 0),
C(4, 10), and D(0, 10)

Prove: The diagonals

bisect each other.
Example 1 Continued

By the Midpoint Formula,

 0 + 4 0 + 10 
mdpt. of AC =  ,  = (2,5)
 2 2 

mdpt. of

The midpoints coincide,

therefore the diagonals
bisect each other.
