TUTORIAL 1: INTRODUCTION TO TELECOMUNICATION SYSTEM

a) Sketch and label a basic block diagram of a communication system. Explain briefly the
each function of the blocks.
b) Give some example of communication channel that are commonly used.
c) Explain two main categories of noise.
d) Give and define two categories of limitations in a communication system.
e) Name three methods of wave propagation in radio propagation. Explain briefly with
appropriate diagram.
f) Explain briefly two types of transmission line.
g) In one communication system, a method of transmitting the information can be done in
one or both direction.
i. Give three differences between half-duplex system and full-duplex system. (Use a
table to show your answer).
ii. Give one example for each transmission mode; simplex system, half-duplex
system and full-duplex system.
h) Proof that
0 dBm + 0 dBm ≠ 0 dBm
i) Explain briefly the following terms.
i. Electromagnetic Frequency Spectrum
ii. Information capacity
iii. Correlated noise
j) Electrical noise is defined as any unwanted electrical energy present in the useable pass-
band of a communication circuit. Using a proper diagram, briefly explain the signal-to-
noise power relation in the case of ideal and non-ideal amplifier.
k) Explain briefly the definition of power measurements below
i. dB
ii. dBm
