Research tasks for FMP logo design

Section 1 of 3: TYPOGRAPHY.

You can use sites such as Dafont for examples or ones which are on the system you are
currently using. Be mindful that too many unusual choices together can be quite
offputting for an audience, so think about how they can compliment, rather than argue
with each other...

Task 1/4. Select 3 typefaces/fonts you might like to use for your PRIMARY choice. This would
be the one you will build your logo from. Describe the DENOTATION (style/appearance) and
CONNOTATION (meaning which could be inferred). Support the suggested inference with at
least one example.

Choice
1:

Reason We like this one because it’s easy to read and simplistic but not too simplistic to
s: the point its boring, Furthermore we like the small cartoony look it has with the
nicely curved edges and wonky font design. It fits with the simplistic age of
logos we’re in right now and might be more attractive to people then the other
options. It could give the impression to people that it’s a more chilled out and
calm podcast which is the goal we are going for.
Choice
2:

Reason We like this one because its big blocky and easy to read, its very in your face
s: and almost shouts at you so you know what you’re reading. The only issue
however is that some people might not like that or see it as a deterrent, it might
be too in peoples face for them to be appealed to the podcast. We’re in an age
where logos are very subtle and simple so seeing something like this might not
be people’s favourite. It might give the idea that it’s a very energetic and all
over the place podcast and while we do want to be energetic, we don’t want to
be over the top with it.
Choice
3:

Reason We picked this as it has a very big Japanese vibe to it which works for my
s: podcast logo because we have a very big anime segment in it which would fit
with the Japanese font and link the font to our topics. Furthermore, it also links
to the Fortnite segment as we talk about the latest Fortnite season which has a
Japanese theme to it. This font would probably give people the idea that we
have a Japanese or anime theme in our podcast, which would be supported by
the titan face on the logo, however it could be misleading because only half of
our podcast is centred around anime.

Task 2/4. Select 3 typefaces/fonts you might like to use for your SECONDARY choice. This
could be used for support within a logo or a strap line. Describe the DENOTATION
(style/appearance) and CONNOTATION (meaning which could be inferred). Support the
suggested inference with at least one example.

Choice
1:

Reason We like this font because it looks quirky and fun and again very cartoony but we
s: think it shares some of the same downsides as my primary choice 2, its very
large and we think the letters are too wonky and would take focus away from
what its saying. We think it would give the impression
Choice
2:

Reason We quite like this front, its sleek and cool looking but it think it would work
s: better if we had more of a horror or creepy theme going on as it has a sort of
rough look to it. It would definitely give the audience a feeling that would be a
polar opposite to what we want the audience to feel when they look at the
logo, plus it would badly contrast the logo itself.
Choice
3:

Reason This font its quite nice and we do like it a lot. It’s themed around the anime
s: Dragon Ball so It would fit the theme of the first segment well as its an anime
segment. However, we feel like it would alienate the latter half after the
sponsor as its purely gaming related and this font doesn’t really give off the
feeling of gaming and might make people miss the split focus of the podcast. we
think its style choices are very fitting with the cartoony choices though the
letters being completely different sizes might be a bit off putting and confusing.

Task 3/4. Select 3 typefaces/fonts you might like to use for your BODY COPY choice. This is
the writing which could contain sentences or even paragraphs. Describe the DENOTATION
(style/appearance) and CONNOTATION (meaning which could be inferred). Support the
suggested inference with at least one example.

Choice
1:

Reason We like this font because it’s nice and easy to read which is important for a
s: body of text but also, we love the pixel style it has, we think it’s a nice change
from the usual font. We enjoy this one specifically because its bolder and
clearer to see what the letters are which again are very important. We think this
would connote to our audience that we are or have a gaming theme
somewhere in the podcast which of course we do.
Choice
2:

Reason Here is another pixel font that we love, its also the font that is used in Minecraft
s: so it would definitely be recognised by the gaming community. We love this as
once again its easy to read which is important but also that so many people will
know this front that they’ll probably enjoy seeing it being used. This would
probably suggest the same thing as the other pixel font, where it would suggest
that we have a gaming focus in it.
Choice
3:

Reason This type writer font looks nice but we think it might have more of an older feel
s: to it where typewriters are over 150 years old it might give the audience the
wrong idea for the podcast topic. Furthermore it would probably look quite
weird compared to the logo image

Task 4/4 When you’ve done these, pick your final three and state them below, with a screen
capture of them and your reasons for selection...

FINAL PRIMARY FONT CHOICE

NAME: Minecraftia

REASONS FOR CHOICE (connotation We picked this font because we think that not only does
and denotation): it look nice as a pixel font but it would resonate a lot
with people who like gaming and are watching the
podcast.
SCREEN SHOT
FINAL SECONDARY FONT CHOICE
NAME: High Voltage Rough

REASONS FOR CHOICE (connotation We love this one because we think the look of it being
and denotation): not overly cartoony but enough to show the fun side of
the podcast, as well as the simplicity works really well
and fits with current font designs in logos.
SCREEN SHOT

FINAL BODY COPY FONT CHOICE

NAME: Gayana

REASONS FOR CHOICE (connotation and We think this one is really nice as it fits the theme of
denotation): the anime half of the podcast. While we do think It
only represents half of the podcast in terms of theme
and topic we think it can be balanced out with the
logo.

Section 2 of 3: COLOUR THEORY.

Think about how the colour wheel (and also by extension the colour sphere) can be
exploited to build a good colour scheme for your branding. You can also use image colour
scheme builders for this task (Trev will show you how to use these).

Your colour scheme could have at least three main components to it and also consider it
against different backgrounds, with outlines and so on.

Select THREE colour schemes based on the information above, before settling on a final
one as a prime brand for your channel and talk about why you chose it (what connotation
might it have, for example).

Task 1/2: Place three SETS of colours that you like in the boxes below, based on using the
links above. Talk about why you like them and what they could mean to an audience.
Colour scheme 1
(screenshot):

Connotation This is one of the main characters in siege newest icon graphic it's
(reason/meaning): been updated, and the colours are a little duller but orange is a
common theme in siege so I will carry that colour through.
Colour scheme 2
(screenshot):

Connotation This is also Ash from siege character icon it’s a simpler icon one you
(reason/meaning): would find in the character menu of the game.
I like the plain orange and the black and greys these are simplistic
colours ill carry through.
Colour scheme 3
(screenshot):

Connotation This is a selection of all siege operators' colours and red and blue is
(reason/meaning): the two team colours in the game so this fits in well and will be used
in production as the light colour onset of the podcast.

Task 2/2: show your final choice of colour scheme and write more detail about your reasons
for selecting it.

SCREEN SHOT OF FINAL COLOUR SCHEME:

MORE DETAILED REASONS FOR CHOICE (connotation and denotation):
We chose this colour scheme because we think it works nicely together. The green and
purple, which are also the main colour scheme for the podcast, look nice together and
they complement each other as they are opposite on the colour wheel but also the dark
and light greys also work as a containment colour to darken the image compared to the
bright green and purple. They help make the logo easier on the eyes and not too ‘in your
face’

Section 3 of 3: COMPOSITION.

Finally, suggest a composition for your project name. We will look at design tools for this,
to help you get to the final overall style you will use. The logo generator here is just to get
you thinking about the overall style, you will be able to work in Photoshop and Premiere
as well.

Task 1/1: Have a play with the generator in the link here, and paste your three favourite
versions, adding notes about what you like and what you’d change..

Paste logo idea 1 here (screenshot):

Reflective notes (what you like/don’t like):

We really like this logo, we think that it captures out podcast really well with the guns
from Valorant, representing the gaming side of it as well as the Eren Jeager’s titan head
representing the anime half. However, we don’t like the blue. We think compared to the
logo itself its very bright and hurts the eye. It also distracts you from the logo itself, so we
think to fix this ill need to choose a darker colour but still bright enough to contrast the
hair and dark guns.

Paste logo idea 2 here (screenshot):

Reflective notes (what you like/don’t like):

For this logo we enjoy the simplicity of it, we like how its easy to look at and the colours
are simple but works. It gets the point across well, showing that it’s a podcast with the
images used. What we don’t like however is that it doesn’t show what the podcast is
about, nor does it have any colour which hinders how interesting it is. Also we think it
would deter potential views from how boring it looks.

Paste logo idea 3 here (screenshot):

Reflective notes (what you like/don’t like):
We quite like the text for this one. While it suffers from not telling the viewer what the
podcast is about, like the 2nd idea, it does have colour and in my opinion it looks nice and
professional with how the text is. What we don’t like about it is, as we said before, it
doesn’t show what the podcast Is about which we think is an important aspect to have,
but we also think its too small and doesn’t capture the eye well.

Task 2/2: show your final choice of logo idea and write more detail about your reasons for
selecting it.

SCREEN SHOT OF FINAL LOGO:

MORE DETAILED REASONS FOR CHOICE (connotation and denotation) including an opinion
from one other student:
We chose this logo because we think it captures our podcast the best. We think the use of
the images to show what the podcast is about work well together, my only issue was with
the background colour which can be fixed easily. We love how the colours work together
also with the green and purple breaking up the other dark colours.

Jack Reid – I think the logo looks nice. I like the big head in the middle because it shows
that they talk about AoT
