Theory

In D.C circuits resistance (opposition to the flow of current), R / Ω = Vdc / Idc.

In A.C circuits impedance (opposition to the flow of current), Z / Ω = Vac / Iac = √ ( R2 + XL2 )

Inductive reactance, X L / Ω = 2πfL

Where f = frequency of the supply

L = inductance of the ironed-cored coil

Procedure:
Dc Characteristics of an Iron-Cored Coil

1) Measure and record the resistance of the coil.

Coil resistance is 22.8 Ω

2) Connect the circuit as shown in fig.1.

3) With the output of the power supply adjusted to give zero voltage, turn it on and then
adjust to obtain ten widely different values of voltage, V, and corresponding values of
current, I.
4) Measure and record these values in table. 1

Ac Characteristics of an Iron-Cored Coil

1) Turn off the power and connect the circuit as shown in fig. 2.
2) Repeat step 2.
3) Measure and record the values in table. 2

Questions

1) Draw separate graphs of V versus I for AC and DC characteristics of iron-cored coil.

2) Determine the resistance of the inductor using your graph of V versus I for DC
characteristic and compare this with the measured value.
