1 Practice Task

8 Part 1: Listening to Problem Solving

5 Part 2: Listening to a Daily Life Conversation

6 Part 3: Listening for Information

5 Part 4: Listening to a News Item

8 Part 5: Listening to a Discussion

6 Part 6: Listening to Viewpoints

 PART 1: LISTENING TO PROBLEM SOLVING
 In Part 1 of the CELPIP Listening Test, a common face-to-face interaction between strangers is
presented.
 To understand different tones and ways of communicating, whether its strangers, friends, or co-
workers, spend time walking through a Canadian city, stopping to listen to conversations as part
of your listening preparation for CELPIP.
 PART 2: LISTENING TO A DAILY LIFE CONVERSATION
 Do not stress if you miss the odd word or meaning of a sentence, just continue to listen and
understand as much as you can for the rest of the conversation. Inevitably, you will pick up the
main points and be able to put the story together.
 Take note of the questions being asked as more information is revealed in the answers.
 CELPIP Listening PART 3: LISTENING FOR INFORMATION
 In the CELPIP Listening Test, an introduction is presented on the topic before the test starts. Use
this time to anticipate what would be said next based on what you already know.
 Keep calm and remember to understand the bigger picture and not get too focused on semantics
during the CELPIP Listening Test. When you extract information and keywords, you deduce its
meaning through thought, common sense, and the most practical and appropriate fit.
 This is called making an inference – whereby you draw your own conclusion based on
understanding, fact, and practical possibility.
 PART 4: LISTENING TO A NEWS ITEM

 During the CELPIP Listening Test, remain focused as the examples become longer and more difficult,
because you will need to take in more information for each question as you progress through the test.
 Never leave a question blank and if you are not sure, then take a good guess.

 PART 5: LISTENING TO A DISCUSSION

 Developing your note-taking skills will help you through the CELPIP Listening Test. When listening to
more than one speaker who are engaging and exchanging information you need to keep track of what is
going on. It is not practical to transcribe conversations word for word as you will fall behind and miss out
on the rest of the content.
 Use keywords, abbreviations, symbols, and always note who said what, but don’t take your focus off the
video!
 Many resources are available online to help practice the art of note-taking.

 PART 6: LISTENING TO VIEWPOINT

 While carefully listening to the conversations, determine the main issue between the
speakers. Interpreting each speaker’s view indicates how well you understand the conversation as a
whole and the different viewpoints.
 When you listen well and refer to notes, you will more likely be able to make accurate and thoughtful
inferences.
 LISTENING TIPS

 PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE RECORDINGS.

 Each audio file can be heard only once, so you will need to listen very carefully to the recordings. Make
sure that you read all the instructions so that you know when the recording will be starting and what you
will need to do when the recording ends.

 TAKE NOTES.

 In any situation, even if you listen very closely, it is difficult to remember everything you hear. This is
even more difficult in a stressful situation like a test. Making notes of key points while you listen to the
recordings will help you remember information that may be useful. Use some abbreviations or symbols
that you think will help you take notes more quickly. You can practice taking notes while listening to the
radio or to a news program to help to prepare for the Listening Test.

 RELAX AND LISTEN.

 If you can’t understand a word, phrase, or sentence, continue listening and stay focused on what you are
hearing. You can still understand many main points even if you cannot understand every word. If you lose
track of what you are listening to, don’t worry! Just continue taking notes on the recording.
 If you concentrate too much on the part that you missed, you might miss even more information.
 MOVE ON IF YOU CAN’T ANSWER A QUESTION.
 In some sections of the Listening Test, you have a set amount of time to answer a question; when
the time runs out, you will automatically be moved forward to the next question. In these test
parts, feel free to take the maximum amount of time to figure out the answer for the question. In
other test parts, however, you have a set amount of time to answer several questions, so you
need to manage your time more carefully. In these sections, if you can’t answer a question, move
on. You can always go back to the question that you were unsure about if you still have time left
at the end.

 WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, MAKE A GUESS!

 Answer all of the Listening Test questions. There is no penalty for incorrect responses on the
multiple-choice questions of the CELPIP Test. If you don’t know an answer, try to eliminate the
options that you know are wrong. By eliminating some options, your chance of guessing the
correct answer becomes even higher.
 MANAGE YOUR TIME.

 Each part of the CELPIP Test has a timer in the corner of your screen, so watch the clock! Make sure that
you have enough time to complete all the questions in each part of the Listening Test.

 CHECK YOUR ANSWERS.

 Before moving on to the next question or section on the Listening Test, make sure that you have clicked
on your answer choice. This is especially important on the parts of the Listening Test where there is no
opportunity to go back and change your answer.
 Practice Remembering.

 One way to improve your ability to predict is to listen to a recorded video, news program, radio
interview, or podcast.
 Use the pause button to stop the recording at the end of a sentence.
 Repeat the sentence.
 Gradually increase the length of what you repeat. You do not have to repeat the words exactly; the goal
is to increase the amount you remember.

 Practice Predicting.

 One way to improve your ability to predict is to listen to a recorded video, news program, radio
interview, or podcast. You can also practice your CELPIP Listening with these Ted Talks.
 As you listen, pause every minute or so and predict what will happen next and what you will hear next.
 Write down any words that you expect to hear, and then check to see how many of them you hear.
 Keep practicing until your accuracy improves.
 Practice listening for specific information

 One way of practicing listening for information is to:

 Pick a video, news program, radio interview, or podcast, and listen for specific information.
 Listen for What, Where, Who, Why, When, and How.
 Listen again for any words that you didn’t catch the first time.
 Who What When Where Why

 Listen to Current Affairs Programs

 Listen to current affairs programs to familiarize yourself with phrases and vocabulary.

 Click here for CELPIP listening topics.

 Answer All the Questions
 Make a logical guess if you can’t identify the answer.
 Do not leave any answer blank. There’s always as chance you’ll pick the right one!

 Use keywords
 Look for keywords or key phrases in the questions. Use these to help you identify answers.
 There may be more than one keyword or key phrase.
 Keywords and key phrases can appear before or after the answer.
 Predict the Answers
 Use all the clues, both visual and spoken, to predict the answers.
 Watch For Synonyms
 Watch and listen for synonyms.
 The answer alternatives often use synonyms to check the strength of your vocabulary.
 Be observant

 Watch and listen to the videos carefully.

 Pay attention to the situation and the background in the video.
 Look for clues that reveal the relationship between the speakers.
 Watch for clues that reveal the mood and level of formality.

 Check your grammar

 Your answer must be grammatically correct.

 Make sure you select the alternative that is in the correct form – it may be a synonym!
 * is it a noun, verb, adjective or adverb?
* singular nouns must have an article.

(4) Solve question screen.
 Guidelines:

 You will hear dialogue between two people and then answer a set of questions.

 The dialogue will be about a day-to-day activity such as shopping or speaking with a work colleague.

 You will have about 5 minutes to listen to the dialogue and answer the five questions that follow.

 In the official test, you will hear the conversation only once through your headset, and there will be no
text to read.

 You will hear a conversation between a husband and wife. She is arriving home late from work.
 STRATEGY #1
 Relax and listen. Don’t spend time worrying about a word or a sentence you missed, because then you
will stop listening to what is being said. Remember: You are not expected to understand every word.
Focus on the entire story. Try to understand what is happening; why, when, and where it is happening;
and who is involved. PROPERTY OF: COLGATE EDUCATION CONSULTING

 STRATEGY #2
 Try to understand the complete meaning of the statement. ◦ Recognize common phrases used in
everyday situations. ◦ Listen carefully for negatives because they completely change the meaning of the
phrase. REMEMBER: Recognizing key words in the answer choices doesn’t make that answer correct.

 STRATEGY #3
 Eliminate the wrong answers:

Each question is provided with four options to choose the best one. This section includes
conversation in the form of information on a specific subject or field of research. This
part is more of an interview with some expert. Students are asked questions based on
the information provided by the expert, whom you will hear during the conversation.
