QUESTION.
a) Examine ways we use sports for people with disabilities to develop our community.

b) How can you promote positive attitudes towards sports for people with disabilities?
a)
Sport refers to any form of physical activity or game, [1]
 often competitive and organized that
aims to use, maintain, or improve physical ability and skills while providing enjoyment to
participants and, in some cases, entertainment to spectators

The World Health Organization defined disability as, as the outcome or result of a complex
relationship between an individual health condition and personal factors and of the external
factors that represent the circumstances in which the individual live. (Person, 2005, p.106)

Sports can be a powerful tool for promoting community development in several ways:

● Fostering social cohesion: Sports bring people together, regardless of their age, gender,

ethnicity, or socio-economic background. When people play sports together, they develop
a sense of belonging and identity within their community, which fosters social cohesion
and helps to break down barriers between different groups.

● Promotes partnership between academic institutions and community development

practitioners to further research in the field of sports for development and peace building
with persons with disabilities.

● Provides opportunities for innovation and recognizes diversity in the disability

communities.

● Encouraging physical activity: Sports can promote physical activity and healthy

lifestyles, which can lead to improved health outcomes and reduced healthcare costs for
communities. Additionally, physical activity can promote mental health and well-being,
which can have positive ripple effects throughout a community.

● Building leadership skills: Sports provide opportunities for individuals with disabilities to

develop leadership skills, such as communication, teamwork, and decision-making.

These skills can be transferred to other areas of life, including education, employment,
and community engagement among people with disabilities.
● Creating economic opportunities: Sports for people with disability events can generate

significant economic activity in a community, including revenue from ticket sales, food
and beverage sales, and tourism. This can create jobs and boost local businesses, which
can contribute to the overall development of the community.

● Providing a platform for community engagement: Sports events can provide a platform

for community members to engage with each other, share their experiences, and celebrate
their achievements. This can help to build a sense of pride and ownership in the
community, and encourage people to work together towards common goals.

● Promotes gender equality (Millennium Development Goal 3) by employing women and

girls with disabilities to acquire health information, skills, social networks and leadership
experiences and lead to an increased employment and lower level of poverty and hunger
(MDG1) by helping to reduce stigma and increase self-confidence.

● Sports for people with disabilities serves as a platform for passing out information to the

entire community for example on health related issues and other social problems.

● Sports for people with disabilities promotes infrastructural development such as

recreational centers, playgrounds and development of roads leading to these playgrounds.

● Promotes leisure and facilitates communication and hence builds social interaction

amongst people with disabilities and other members of the community.

● Promotes advocacy and social policy reforms or change as far as disability related issues

are concerned such as social exclusion and discrimination

● Helps in transforming community attitudes towards persons with disabilities by

enhancing their skills. This ends up reducing stigma and discrimination associated with
disabilities.

In conclusion, sports can be a powerful tool for promoting community development, by fostering
social cohesion, encouraging physical activity, building leadership skills, creating economic
opportunities, and providing a platform for community engagement.
b)
Promoting a positive attitude towards sports for people with disabilities involves creating
an inclusive environment that encourages participation, focuses on abilities rather than
disabilities, and provides the necessary support and resources for individuals to succeed.
Here are some specific strategies to promote a positive attitude towards sports for people
with disabilities:

● Increase awareness and education: Educate people about the benefits of sports for people

with disabilities, including improved physical health, social inclusion, and mental well-
being. Raise awareness about the different types of sports and activities available for
people with disabilities.

● Provide access to adaptive sports equipment: Ensure that sports facilities have the

necessary equipment and accommodations to allow people with disabilities to participate.

This may include wheelchair-accessible facilities, adaptive equipment, and assistive
technology.

● Encourage participation: Create a welcoming environment that encourages people with

disabilities to participate in sports. This may include offering introductory sessions or

classes, providing adaptive coaching, and promoting inclusive practices.

● Focus on abilities rather than disabilities: Encourage a positive attitude towards

disabilities by focusing on what individuals can do rather than what they can't. Celebrate
achievements and highlight the unique strengths and abilities of individuals with
disabilities.

● Provide support: Offer the necessary support and resources for individuals with

disabilities to succeed in sports. This may include access to specialized training and
coaching, physical therapy, and mental health resources.

In conclusion, promoting a positive attitude towards sports for people with disabilities involves
creating an inclusive environment that celebrates diversity and focuses on abilities rather than
disabilities. By providing the necessary support and resources, individuals with disabilities can
thrive in sports and lead healthy, active lives.
