Introduction:

This property measures the ability of the timber to


withstand loads applied on the end grain and is of
importance where use as columns or props. Resistance to
end grain crushing is required in many types of fastenings
and should then be considered in conjunction with the two
following properties:

1- Hardness
2- Shear Strength

Purpose of the test:

To determine the comp. strength of timber parallel and


perpendicular to the grains.

Apparatus:

1. Comp. Testing Machine.


2. Ruler.
3. Oven.

Procedure:

1. Determine the cross-sectional area of the test specimen,


measure the dimensions of the cross section.

2. Dry the specimen until it gets a constant weight.


3. Place the specimen in testing machine.

4. Apply Comp. force to the specimen then record the


ultimate failure load.
