Introduction

At Arturo Michelena university the modern languages business school


teaching-learning strategy is based on the case method since we should be able to
acquire not only native-like English proficiency but public speaking skills, business
judgment, and critical Thinking.
The case method is also known as a dynamic and engaging discussion led by
students' thoughts and comments instead of lectures taught by faculty.

What is the case method?


We define the case method as a real-world situation as a basis for learning.
We take real or hypothetical business problems or situations in which we have to
develop and come up with solutions.

How does it work?


Well, first of all, class preparation is mandatory, as students, we must have read the
case and already have a few solutions in mind beforehand since we need to engage
in the class discussion to have meaningful learning, also we need to have in mind
that this is a proper interactive class, so we need to speak but most importantly
elaborate.

Then, once we are in the classroom we start by reading the case, the professor sets
the stage by describing the situation and asking what would you do if…? Most of the
cases are about someone leading a real or fictional organization and facing knotty
real-life challenges and our job as students is to sift through the information and
decide what we would do if we were in that person or company’s shoes.

After that, we discuss the case. This is the most important part because everyone
has perspective and you get to know all the student's ideas and their professional
backgrounds based on their life experiences. All of this allows us to have in mind the
thought diversity and to create a constructive debate in class.

Finally, we reflect on the case. The case method prepares us to be in leadership


positions where we will face time-sensitive decisions with limited information.

Why is it important?
As a teacher and a student as well, I believe that the case method helps students to
be more effective not only in spreadsheets but actually in leading and persuading
people in real life, otherwise, it helps to develop active learning in which students are
involved in and actively participate in such a manner that they can turn the concepts
into possession, in other words, if we interact, dispute and analyze, it will be more
likely for us to remember the topics also will help to strengthen critical thinking and
business judgment.
