Materials:

● Classroom instruments
● The Ant and the Grasshopper (video in Powerpoint)
● BAG melodies worksheet (PRINT)
● Pencils
● Glockenspiel
● Name that Tune worksheet (PRINT)
● iPads
● Ukuleles

Content:

1st:

The teacher and students will sing the Hello Song as a warm-up.

The students will do a Twinkle Twinkle Little Star boomwhacker play along video as
an intro to the class.
o
The teacher will review boomwhacker expectations first such as resting
position, playing position, how to follow the play along video, etc.

The teacher will then review the terms forte and piano.
● The students will then get in a circle and the teacher will show the students
several different instruments that we have in our classroom.
o The students will determine if each instrument is forte or piano by showing
their answer with their bodies: pat their lap – forte; spirit fingers – piano.
● The teacher will then listen to the song John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt as a
closing activity.
o The teacher will ask the students what happened in the song. (We got
softer each time)
2nd:

● The teacher and students will sing the Hello Song as a warm-up.
● The teacher will ask the students if they know what a mannequin is.
o The teacher will explain the song The Mannequin
o The students will dance along with The Mannequin.
● The teacher will then tell the students that today we are going to learn the three
different ways notes can move in music.
o Step, leap, and repeat
o The teacher will go over a few examples.
● The teacher will explain that she is going to be reading a story call The Ant and
the Grasshopper. Each time I say the word “Ant” the students will sing the word
stepping to Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, Fa, Mi, Re, Do. Each time I say the word
“Grasshopper” the students will sing the word leaping to Do, Sol, Do, Sol.
o The teacher will read the story and the students will sing when those
words come up.
● The teacher will then explain that she is going to sing some examples of steps,
leaps and repeats.
● The students will move according to what they hear. (Step-take one step forward,
Leap-take one leap forward, Repeat-Stomp in place)
3rd:
● The teacher and students will sing the Hello Song as a warm-up.
● Students will be asked to identify the three notes on the board. (B, A, and G)
● The teacher will explain that today they will take all the notes that they’ve
learned and use them to read and play music.
● The teacher will ask the students to identify each note in “Au Clair De La Lune” as
a class and the students will fill this in on their papers.
o After going over the answers, the teacher will play the song on the
glockenspiel to show what the song they just identified sounds like.
● The students will then work on identifying “Hot Crossed Buns” and “Mary Had a
Little Lamb”.
o The teacher will play these songs for the class as well.
● Students will turn in what they have completed so far and will be told that they
may finish up any extra work next music class.
● The teacher explains that next music class, they will learn how to play these
melodies on a virtual xylophone.

4 :

● The students will start by guessing the genre of a song playing over the loud
speaker as a warm-up.
● The teacher will review all the notes they have learned, including the notes above
and below the staff and ledger lines.
● The teacher will explain that now that they know how to read the notes on the
staff, they can use those notes to identify and play songs.
● The teacher explains the Name that Tune worksheet
o Using the notes they know, students are to fill in the letter names of the
notes of four popular songs.
o Once they are done filling in the note names, Miss. Fluke will spot check
their work.
o Once Miss. Fluke gives then the go ahead, the students will get out their
iPad and play each song on their virtual xylophone.
o The student will then use what they played to identify the mystery title of
the song.
o At the end of the activity, Miss. Fluke goes over the answers for all four
songs.
● If students do not finish the entire worksheet, they will have time to complete it
next class.

5th:
● The teacher will quickly review the finger numbers, string numbers, fret numbers,
strumming, and how to hold the ukuleles.
● The teacher will then allow students to get their ukuleles and sit with their
ukulele partners.
● The teacher and students will review the C7 chord.
o 1st finger, 1st fret, 1st string
o The teacher will demonstrate by playing the chord first, then will allow
students to practice this on their own, switching between partners.
▪ The teacher will walk around the classroom to check student
understanding and progress.
o The teacher will bring the class back together to echo a few rhythms by
strumming and playing the C7 chord.
● The teacher and students will review the C chord.
o 3rd finger, 3rd fret, 1st string
o The teacher will demonstrate by playing the chord first, then will allow the
students to practice this on their own, switching between partners.
▪ The teacher will walk around the classroom to check student
understanding and progress.
o The teacher will bring the class back together to echo a few rhythms by
strumming and playing the C chord.
● The teacher then demonstrates how to switch between chords C and C7.
o If students feel confident with both chords, they may try doing this on
their own.
● The students and the teacher will then play the song “The Beat Goes On” by Sonny
and Cher to practice the C chord.
● The students will put their ukuleles back on the ukulele cart as they found them
and line up for dismissal.
Assessments:

1st: The teacher will visually and aurally observe the students understanding the meaning
of forte and piano.
2nd: The teacher will visually and aurally observe the students understanding the three
ways that notes can move.
3rd: The teacher will visually and aurally observe the students identifying and performing
treble clef notes.
4th: The teacher will visually and aurally observe the students identifying and performing
treble clef notes and ledger line notes.
5th: The teacher will visually and aurally observe the students playing the C7 and C chords
on the ukulele.
